The Unicorn Preservation Society (UPS) is seeking new Trustees to join our Board at an exciting and significant time in the organisation’s history.

HMS Unicorn is one of the world’s oldest surviving warships and a unique part of Scotland’s maritime heritage. The Society is responsible for safeguarding this extraordinary vessel and ensuring that it can continue to inspire, educate and engage visitors for generations to come.

We are currently overseeing a period of significant development, including:

• A multi-million-pound capital conservation project to secure the long-term future of HMS Unicorn.

• Work to address the organisation’s long-term financial sustainability, developing new partnerships, income streams and opportunities.

We are looking for Trustees who can bring skills, experience and enthusiasm to support this next chapter. These may have been acquired during employment, volunteering and/or home life.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people with experience in:

• Finance, accounting or audit

• Managing major capital projects, construction or infrastructure

• Human resources and organisational development

• Fundraising, philanthropy or income generation

• Heritage management, museums or conservation

However, we welcome applications from anyone who can bring relevant skills, experience, networks, curiosity and a commitment to our mission. Previous trustee or board experience is not required — we value people who can offer fresh perspectives and sound judgement, and we provide support and induction to help new Trustees succeed.

Future Chair Opportunity

We are also seeking one individual who has the interest and potential to become Chair of the Board in the future.

The successful candidate will initially join as a Trustee, gaining a full understanding of the Society and its priorities before taking on the Chair role at an appropriate point. Previous Chair experience is welcome but not essential; we are looking for someone with strong leadership skills, strategic insight and the ability to build effective relationships.

About the Role

As a Trustee, you will help to:

• Shape the future strategy of the Unicorn Preservation Society.

• Support the delivery of a once-in-a-generation conservation project.

• Ensure effective governance and long-term sustainability.

• Act as an ambassador for HMS Unicorn and the Society.

• Contribute your expertise and perspective to Board discussions.

The role is voluntary and not remunerated. The current time commitment is approximately 10 hours per month, including Board meetings, preparation, strategic discussions and occasional support for Society activities.

Appointments are for four-year terms, with the potential for reappointment. No trustee may serve over 12 years (whether over a single or fragmented period).

The Work Room is seeking new Board Trustees

We are seeking 4 – 5 people to join our Board of Trustees to support The Work Room in its mission to empower artists in making thoughtful and pioneering dance for diverse contexts at home and internationally.

Our Trustees include artist-members of The Work Room as well as people who bring expertise and experience from other sectors to our governance.

Who we are looking for?

As a registered charity, The Work Room’s board of trustees are legally and ethically responsible for governing the organisation. The board includes artists from our membership as well as people who bring their experience from other areas of work. Collectively they support the strategic vision and leadership of the charity and ensure The Work Room remains true to its values, relevant to our artist communities, is well managed and financially sustainable.

The Work Room operates with a small, efficient and experienced staff team. We practice an alternative leadership model in the performing arts; one that embraces multiplicity rather than being focused on a singular artistic vision. Our approach leans into the collective; actively distributing power, shared agency & collegiate decision-making. A commitment to this, rather than traditional hierarchical dynamics, is critical for staff & trustees.

You don’t need to have previous experience of being on a board and for many of our existing trustees, this has been their first experience in such a role. The Trustees work collectively and you will be provided a full induction to help you understand the role and responsibilities of being a charity trustee. We also encourage trustees to undertake training opportunities which guide on best practice in governance.

These are voluntary roles with travel and access costs covered. We are committed to putting in place any access support required to enable full participation in board meetings, including childcare costs, providing BSL interpretation for meetings or providing information in different formats. We also want to make sure our board is made up of a diverse range of intersectional identities and experiences.

What the role involves

The role of the Board of Trustees is to support the work of The Work Room and provide leadership and strategic governance, in line with the core purpose and policies of the company.

The Work Room is a charity, and our board of trustees are guided by the guidance and good practice provided by the Office of Scottish Charity Regulator. OSCR (Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator) The board usually meets four times a year online and at an annual in-person away day. In addition to this we have an AGM (Annual General Meeting) of all members, and board members may get involved in events, training or on sub-committees focused on specific areas of work.

In preparation for these meetings and to enable us to move decisions forward there is also in between work anticipated such as reviewing board papers including financial reports. A key aspect of the role is to build a collegiate working relationship with The Work Room staff team and other board members contributing to collective and considered decision making.

We consider key qualities of board member include:

• Asking questions and participating in discussions leading to collective decision making;
• The ability to act discreetly and to respect confidentiality;
• A genuine interest in and commitment to The Work Room’s work, dance and artists as leaders;
• A willingness to learn about the wider context in which The Work Room is situated.

The Borders Music Festival (BMF) celebrates creativity, collaboration and community. Each September, we bring world-class artists and locals together, inspiring audiences and young people with music of the highest quality.

Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust (PKHT) is a long-established and respected charity focused on the protection and enhancement of Perthshire’s historic environment. To operate effectively, the Trust relies on volunteers with a range of skills to provide strategic guidance, good governance and support to the staff. Trustees ensure that PKHT adheres to legal and financial regulations and support the wider delivery of key projects. They also champion the work of the organisation, helping to raise awareness of the Trust’s work.

Due to the retirement of a number of long-standing members, the current Trustees are looking to strengthen the Board by recruiting several new Trustees with a variety of experience and backgrounds and who have a genuine passion for safeguarding the heritage of Perth and Kinross.

The current Board is seeking applications from those with interest in the work of the Trust and who have time available to commit to supporting PKHT.

Time commitment for Trustees

The PKHT Board meets 4 times per year and meetings usually last around 2 hours. Board meetings are held in person in Perth, but a hybrid option to join online is feasible if that is more convenient. Currently, meetings are during the day but will be adapted to suit the majority of Trustees and may therefore vary in timing.

Board papers are emailed out by staff a week in advance and Trustees are expected to have read the papers in advance of the meeting so that they can support decision-making and ask any questions.

There may also be the following additional time commitments:

• Staff and Trustee Away Day -where the whole team get together to learn, meet and share ideas, usually once per year.
• Sub-committees- Trustees who are on sub-committees such as finance or the Perth City Heritage Fund will be invited to attend additional meetings. Being a member of a sub-committee is voluntary and depends on relevant experience and time availability.
• Ad hoc meetings- there may be occasional additional meetings such as an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) or where an urgent decision is required.
• Decision by email- where a decision is required, staff will email Trustees and set a deadline for response.
• Events- Trustees may be asked to represent the Trust at local or occasionally national events.
• Board appointments- those who have additional responsibilities such as Chairperson and Treasurer will have additional time commitments as required by the Board and staff.

Trustees are appointed for three years and can serve a maximum of three terms (9 years) as per the current PKHT Articles.

Candidate Experience

PKHT welcomes applications from people of all backgrounds and we particularly welcome those who are currently under-represented including younger people (see below). This ensures that we are fully representing the geographic area that we serve.

Potential Trustees must have an interest in and enthusiasm for the heritage of Perth and Kinross, and we are also looking for the following areas of expertise:

• Architecture/ Surveying
• Community engagement

Young Trustees

PKHT is committed to increasing the diversity of its Board including through the recruitment of younger Trustees. We would therefore particularly welcome applications from people aged up to around 30 years old. All Trustees must legally be 18 years old, so this is the minimum age for applicants.

Becoming a member of a Board is useful for a person’s CV by helping to develop skills in decision-making, governance and in how grant-funded projects operate. In return, a Board gains from having the perspective of younger people who may bring a different viewpoint and can help to better represent the community a Board serves.

We understand that younger people may have little or no Board experience and we will offer support to any we recruit with mentoring from more experienced Trustees.

Preference will be given to those based in the Perth & Kinross area.
