About St John Scotland

St John Scotland is a national charity registered in Scotland and part of the global St John community. We are a unique organisation that operates both as a chivalric order and a charity focused on community health resilience. Our mission is to support NHS Scotland, the Scottish Ambulance Service, and other national and local organisations.

Our services, delivered across Scotland by 14 Local Area Committees and dedicated volunteers, include Patient Transport Services, Public Access Defibrillators, and CPR awareness, we also support Community First Responders groups. Additionally, we engage in international work, supporting a community-led healthcare program in Malawi and the St John Eye Hospital Group in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem.

About the role

The Communications and Marketing Executive will play a key role in raising awareness of St John Scotland’s work, strengthening our brand, and supporting volunteer engagement. You will lead on developing and delivering creative communications (both internal and external) and marketing activity across digital, print, and media channels, helping to inspire people to support and get involved with our mission.

Key Responsibilities

Communications and Marketing

  • Develop and implement communications and marketing plans aligned to St John Scotland’s strategy.
  • Create engaging content for digital platforms (website, social media, email newsletters) to raise the charity’s profile and showcase impact.
  • Produce marketing materials (leaflets, posters, presentations, videos) for campaigns and service promotion.
  • Support fundraising and volunteer recruitment campaigns through targeted communications activity.
  • Maintain and update the charity’s website to ensure content is accurate, accessible, and engaging.

Media and Public Relations

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with media outlets, providing press releases and responding to enquiries.
  • Identify and develop opportunities for media coverage of St John Scotland’s activities.
  • Support the Chief Executive and Trustees in representing the organisation’s work publicly.

Internal Communications and Volunteer Support

  • Provide communications support to Local Area Committees and volunteers, helping them promote services in their communities.
  • Develop toolkits, templates, and guidance to enable consistent branding and messaging across Scotland.
  • Share stories of volunteer impact across internal and external channels.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Monitor performance of communications campaigns and digital channels, providing regular reports and insights.
  • Keep up to date with communications and marketing best practice in the charity sector.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Proven experience in communications, marketing, or related role.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with ability to produce content for different audiences.
  • Confident in managing social media platforms and creating digital content.
  • Good design skills (e.g. Canva, InDesign, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with staff, volunteers, and external stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Experience working in the charity or voluntary sector.
  • Knowledge of media relations and press engagement.
  • Understanding of volunteer-led organisations.
  • Photography, video, or graphic design skills.
