St John Scotland is seeking enthusiastic individuals to join us as Service Delivery Officers, who will help support our volunteer teams in delivering life-saving services across Scotland. The role of the Service Delivery Officer is to support our volunteer teams to develop and deliver core services and outcomes to build and consolidate the identity of St John Scotland nationally and in local communities. It is a WFH (work from home) opportunity with some occasional travel to our Head Office in Edinburgh and across Scotland to our 12 local Area teams as required.

We currently have two part time roles available.

  • Service Delivery Officer (PAD & CPR) - 30 hours
  • Service Delivery Officer (PTS & CFR) - 22.5 hours

Communications Manager

Our services are delivered by dedicated teams of volunteers, working in the heart of communities across the country.

We provide free CPR training and support communities to install Public Access Defibrillators to help save lives from cardiac arrest, while in Angus our Community First Responder volunteers respond to life-threatening emergencies in the local area.

We support hundreds of patients every year who are undergoing treatment for cancer, or dialysis, to get to hospital for treatment with our Patient Transport services.

We believe when we work together, we can save lives.

The Communications Manager will play a key role in the delivery of our strategy 2021-2025 and our ambition to become a well known Scottish charity, delivering effective services that make a difference in communities across the country.

We have recently developed a refreshed brand identity to enable us to improve our profile, recruit volunteers and grow our services. The role of the Communications Manager will be to build on this work and further develop our internal communications and external profile.

As part of a small national staff team, the Communications Manager leads on all communications and marketing activity, working at a strategic level but also managing the day to day communications requirements of the organisation.

As well as leading communications relating to St John Scotland’s charitable services, the Communications Manager will also oversee communications for members of the Order of St John, including newsletters, an annual publication and event support around the annual Festival.

Finance Manager

Our charitable services are delivered by teams of dedicated volunteers across the country, and include community-based CPR training, supporting the provision of Public Access Defibrillators, Patient Transport Services, and Community First Responders. We also support overseas programmes, with current activity including Scottish Government and St John Scotland-supported projects in Malawi, and annual financial contributions to the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem. As well as being a charity, we are the Scottish chapter of the Order of St John – an order of chivalry of the British Crown whose members have been invited to join in recognition of their service to our charitable aims.

We are now seeking a Finance Manager to join our head office team, based from our office in central Edinburgh.

The role of the Finance Manager is to provide the CEO with the finance, IT and risk management functions of the charity, in support of the Board, HQ staff, Areas volunteer teams in their delivery of all aspects of St John Scotland’s output, both charitable and chivalric, and contribute to the overall strategy and objectives of St John Scotland.

More specifically, the role includes:

• Maintenance of the day-to-day financial transactions of St John Scotland, including purchases, receipts and payments. • Preparation of management accounts and end of year statutory accounts. Preparation and monitoring of the annual budget, including internal quarterly reports.

• Oversight of IT and database management.

• Assisting the CEO with Risk Management.

Volunteers are the heart of St John Scotland. Our recent strategic review has identified the need for us to better support and recognise our current volunteers, as well as attract and retain new volunteers to help us deliver our services.

We’re committed to creating a positive volunteering culture and ensuring we are an organisation which is attractive to volunteers, nurtures and recognises them.

This is an exciting time for St John Scotland as we implement our new strategy and increase our staff team to help us achieve our ambitions. The Volunteer Development Officer will work alongside a team of staff, and closely with our volunteer-led Area Committees across Scotland.

Main responsibilities

1. Contribute to the implementation of our strategic plan with specific responsibility for a volunteering strategy for St John Scotland.

2. Support the recruitment, induction and retention of new volunteers to enable the growth of our charitable services across Scotland.

3. Build a positive volunteering culture where volunteers feed recognised, rewarded and supported.

4. Work alongside volunteers, staff and the Board to continuously improve our volunteering practices in line with charity legislation and best practice in the sector.

5. Manage day-to-day operations relating to volunteers and volunteering across St John Scotland.

About the roles

The role of the Development Officers is to support our volunteer teams to develop and deliver core services and outcomes in order to build and consolidate the identity of St John Scotland nationally and in local communities.

Each Development Officer will support a number of Area Teams and will also have a lead role in one of our core services. If you have particular experience or an interest in Patient Transport, CPR, Defibrillators or Community First Responders please explain this in your application.

The roles are home-based with some travel required; we are looking to recruit people in the East, West and North of Scotland so that we have on-the-ground support for our volunteer teams.

Main duties and responsibilities

The focus of these roles will be:

  • Supporting the development and delivery of our core services at a local level, working with Area Teams, the Service Development Manager and partners to determine what is achievable and desirable in each Area in contributing to overall strategic objectives.
  • Working with Area teams to engage with local communities to develop an understanding of their needs and demonstrate the impact of St John Scotland services in each Area.
  • Building the capacity and enthusiasm of volunteer teams to deliver outcomes, ensuring that all volunteers feel recognised, supported an enabled. Working with the Volunteer Development Officer and our Communities of Practice to ensure that appropriate recruitment, development, and governance requirements are met in each Area and for each service.

  • Higher education with evidence of ongoing development

Experience

  • Working with volunteers in a leadership role within a decentralised organisation to deliver specific outcomes.
  • Community engagement to initiate projects, develop, deliver, and demonstrate impact.

The focus of the role will be:

• Developing and managing our core services at a national level, ensuring effective budgeting, planning, and reporting. This is very much a collaborative process, working with Area Teams, the Board, and partners to determine what is achievable and desirable in each Area in contributing to overall strategic objectives

• Building the capacity and enthusiasm of volunteer teams to deliver outcomes, ensuring that all of our volunteers feel recognised, supported and enabled

• Managing and developing a team of up to four part-time Development Officers (to be recruited summer 2021) who will be based remotely in different areas of Scotland, to support the Areas in delivering charitable services.

• Contributing to the continuous improvement of our charitable services by encouraging and enabling collaboration across Area Teams, ensuring effective governance arrangements are in place for all services, and working alongside partner organisations to develop best practice in service development and delivery.
