Community Engagement and Events Officer

Role

Purpose: To promote Selkirk Regeneration’s project, Sustainable Selkirk, and deliver events within the local community.

Sustainable Selkirk

Sustainable Selkirk is a community-led project delivered by Selkirk Regeneration and funded by the National Lottery Community Fund. Sustainable Selkirk aims to bring the Selkirk community together to take action towards climate change. The project has three broad outcomes; to reduce domestic greenhouse gas emissions, promote sustainable travel and increase awareness of the climate crisis. We’re looking for someone who is motivated and passionate about community-level climate action to help achieve our project objectives.

A healthy community is a happy community, and vice versa. Therefore, Sustainable Selkirk delivers projects that are focused on enhancing social well-being and promoting resilience to meet the needs of the local people, whilst encouraging longer-term practical and meaningful action in response to climate change. We deliver a range of activities including providing home energy advice, e-bike trials and skills training.

This is an exciting time to join Sustainable Selkirk. We plan to grow our team as we expand our activities to meet the needs of our community and tackle the inextricably linked issues of climate change and the cost-of-living crisis. We are working to make Selkirk and the surrounding area a greener, fairer and climate-ready community.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Engage with our community in a way that empowers local people to take ownership of their learning and adopt sustainable behaviour changes
  • Attend local events and groups to represent Sustainable Selkirk and the Selkirk Regeneration Community Development Plan and promote our programmes of activities
  • produce exciting communication about upcoming project activities using a range of different marketing materials and platforms, including printed materials, newsletters, website, blogs, images, videos and social media
  • provide technical support for online events

General responsibilities:

  • work as part of a team to promote and raise awareness of environmental and community development issues in the local area
  • promote the values of Sustainable Selkirk when working in the local community
  • provide excellent customer service
  • communicate effectively with other team members, report on the success of allocated tasks and, attend team meetings and training courses where appropriate
  • undertake other duties in line with the job purpose

Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Personal Attributes:

  • Experience of working in community development or environmental education (E)
  • Experience of working in partnership with others (E)
  • Knowledge and experience of planning, promoting and delivering events and/or workshops (E)
  • Knowledge of a range of different marketing methods, including printed materials, newsletters, blogs, images, videos and social media (D)
  • Knowledge and understanding of environmental and climate change issues, or a willingness for continued learning and personal development. Training opportunities will be provided (D)
  • Understanding of the community and voluntary sector (E)
  • Experience communicating and engaging with a range of audiences, ideally within local community settings (E)
  • Experience of marketing and events monitoring, evaluation and reporting (D)
  • Experience of working with and supporting volunteers (D)
  • Excellent communication skills (E)
  • Excellent organisational skills (E)
  • Ability to use your own initiative and plan a diverse workload (E)
  • Good IT skills (E)
  • Enthusiastic about engaging people in the environment and carbon reduction
  • A positive and supportive attitude (E)
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt according to the needs of the project (E)
  • Willingness to travel within the local area and occasionally work out with normal working hours (E)
