Who we are

The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) is the professional body for speech and language therapists in the United Kingdom (UK). We support and represent over 22,000 members while operating nationally across our office and members hubs in London, Belfast, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. Our mission is to improve the lives of people with communication and swallowing needs by facilitating and promoting research, producing guidance, holding events, and influencing government. We aim to promote better education and training for speech and language therapists and provide information to our members and the public about speech and language therapy.

The role

Working as a member of the RCSLT Scotland team and with colleagues across the UK, the Policy Adviser will be responsible for securing meaningful outcomes on delegated strands of policy work, supporting our strong policy and public affairs profile with the Scottish Parliament and Government. Work will involve liaising with MSPs, government officials and other stakeholders at a senior level. Awareness of speech and language therapy and experience of working for a member organisation would be an advantage.

This is a hybrid role, working from home with at least one day per week working from the RCSLT Scotland office.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • An awareness of the policy direction of travel in health, education, and social care
  • Experience of influencing policy and political processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of how law and social policy is developed within the public sector.
  • Excellent networking, negotiating, influencing and communication skills.
  • A successful track record of providing advice to civil servants and politicians or other senior decision makers on complex and sensitive issues.
  • The ability to contribution and lead on development of projects across a complex organisation
  • The ability to lead in the development, delivery, monitoring, and evaluation of RCSLT Scotland campaign activity.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate, persuade and influence.
  • Very strong communication skills.
  • An ability to work under pressure, manage time, plan, prioritise and work to deadlines.
  • The ability to analyse and synthesise complex information.
