The Junction is an award-winning charity that takes a holistic approach towards young people’s health and well-being. Our vision is for all young people to achieve their full potential.
We work with 12-21 year olds in North East Edinburgh offering one-to-one support, counselling and creative projects to support their wellbeing by helping them explore their life choices.
Vacancy: Chair, Board of Trustees
We are looking for a committed individual to join as our Chair on the board of Trustees from January 2024. This is an incredible opportunity to make a difference with The Junction, playing a key role in progressing our vision forward whilst partnering with our Director and our board.
Our Chair is a core leadership in the organisation, responsible for connecting and leading relationships between the Director and the Board. The Chair may also represent the organisation at external events and meetings, act as a signatory on behalf of The Junction, and take part in recruitment for the board and senior appointments in the staff team.
We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with previous Trustee, Board and or/committee experience. There are many important qualities that this role requires and the ideal candidate joining will have previous leadership experience, willingness to ask questions, share our values of equality, transparency and community as well as their time commitment to the role. Responsibilities
Some of the tasks can include:
- Reviewing agendas for the meeting in consultation with the staff and other trustees
- Ensuring meetings are run efficiently, and discussion and decision-making is democratic and fully participative
- Holding the casting vote in the event of a split decision
- Ensuring that AGMs are carried out according to the governing document
- Ensuring structure is in place for board activity and that these are reviewed regularly, ensuring the board is able to run effectively
- Manage relationship with the Director of The Junction and act as a representative of the charity at external events
- Signatory responsibilities
Key attributes, skills and experience
- Experience chairing a board or committee, experience doing this in charity sector is desirable
- Current or previous experience serving as a trustee or committee member
- Willingness to ask questions and curiosity

- Time commitment to carry out duties

Time commitment
Duties/tasks for the year include:
- Attend 4 board meetings a year (quarterly)
- Attend or dial-in to 4 informal trustee meetings with board members
- Contribute to sub-groups that meets roughly 4 times - a team of staff and board members
- Regular check in calls with the Director
- Attend 2 Development Days with staff and/or trustees (usually but not always a Saturday in Spring and Autumn)
- External events (ad hoc)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead our Board and Charity. We are looking for someone who is dynamic, with capacity to contribute, and willing to share their expertise and ideally to also engage their network to broaden and deepen support for Venture Trust. An affinity with our work, supporting people in their development to overcome life challenges, is essential.

We are recruiting three new trustees.
We support young people in reaching their full potential by building their confidence and self-belief through participation in outdoor adventure activities. We deliver residential courses, primarily in the West of Scotland, for groups of young people from across the UK. Our Trustees
The board of trustees needs to be able to shape strategy and effect organisational change alongside a very heavy delivery workload. Holding the charity to account, they ensure value for donors’ money. They are responsible for ensuring that risks to the charity and young people are managed and mitigated.
In this small organisation, the Trustees are involved in the management of the charity and the challenges that brings. Trustees meet at least four times a year, either in Argyll or Edinburgh, face to face or with video conferencing.
Experience of charity governance, fundraising and outdoor pursuits would be useful. Sharing our determination to support disadvantaged young people using outdoor learning is essential. We also would welcome applicants with strong skills and experience in any one of finance, GDPR, child protection and safeguarding, youth work (inequalities and inclusion) and health and safety regulation.
Up2Us is a dynamic and innovative third sector organisation, recognised by the Care Inspectorate as “going the extra mile” in providing residential care and community support to children and young people who have experienced childhood trauma and need support in their journey to adulthood. We are committed to nurturing the potential of our young people, supporting families, and enhancing the wellbeing of those we care for.
Job Purpose
Being a Trustee is both rewarding and challenging! Our Trustees play a key role in making sure that Up2Us stays true to its mission and values by serving the interests of our young people and families to achieve better life chances, better life experiences and better wellbeing.
It is an exciting time to work with Up2Us as we endeavour to expand our free “Time for Change” project which supports young women, caught up in the Criminal Justice System. We also plan to proceed with building a therapeutic centre named by our young people as “The Ace Space,”. The first Trauma Centre in Scotland will combine a full range of therapeutic, life, leisure, learning, and work skills for young people from one central hub.
As a member of the Up2Us Board you will:
- be responsible for the strategic, tactical and operational direction of Up2us
- uphold our values and principles
- receive reports from the Chief Executive and other staff on Up2Us operations and finances, to inform decision making and make sure that all statutory and legal requirements for Up2Us are met.

Wellbeing Worker | Lighthouse Project (Central Scotland)

We are seeking a qualified and compassionate mental health and wellbeing worker.
Join our team to deliver face-to-face services for children and young people from armed forces families in a boarding school environment.
In this role, you will provide essential mental health support, promote emotional wellbeing, and empower young people to navigate challenges faced through our Lighthouse Project at Queen Victoria School (Dunblane), funded by the Veterans Foundation. You will be responsible for planning and delivery of one-to-one, peer group, and drop-in sessions. You will work directly with young people to co-produce mental health and wellbeing resources, to empower young people to become wellbeing ambassadors and support staff and parents to enhance understanding of many relevant topics.
About the Lighthouse project
The Lighthouse project was coproduced with young people from Queen Victoria School in recognition of the unique challenges of forces life and boarding. It has been delivered as a pilot for the past year and has shown success in supporting young people to maintain or improve their mental health and wellbeing. With generous funding from The Veterans Foundation the project Forces Children Scotland will continue the delivery of the Lighthouse Project for a further two years.
In this unique role, the post holder will be employed by Forces Children Scotland but based and embedded in Queen Victoria School which is located in Dunblane. The school delivers board and education for children and young people from aged 11-18 years who have parents serving in the armed forces across the United Kingdom and overseas.
About the person we’re looking for
You will need an undergraduate degree in psychology, mental health, social work, education, youth work, or equivalent qualification/experience to apply. Moreover, you require at least 2 years’ experience working in mental health service delivery/support.
Here’s a selection of further essential criteria:
- Experience in working collaboratively and an ability to engage with children and young people and work effectively in distressing and challenging circumstances,.
- Experience in coproducing projects with children and young people in a mental health and wellbeing context.
- Experience in developing and delivering mental health and wellbeing support for children and young.
- Experience in evaluating the impact of mental health and wellbeing.
- Detailed understanding of Safeguarding and its application in practice.
- A strong understanding of trauma and adversity in childhood and the impact this can have on mental health and wellbeing.
