Role

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Design function in Scotland at an officer level. We have an ambition to ensure we live in cities where our streets and public spaces serve everyone; where everyone can live and travel safely and healthily, and where nobody is excluded. You will work in partnership with colleagues, local communities, project partners and stakeholders to reclaim streets as public spaces, creating healthier, happier, fairer cities and towns that are accessible to all.

You will have the opportunity to work on projects which seek to tackle some of the greatest challenges facing the built environment, including the response to the climate emergency, the inequitable distribution of (and access to) green space, tackling vehicle dominance and the realisation of equitable and joyful public space for all.

As an Urban Designer in Sustrans Scotland , you will be responsible for producing deliverables and outputs to support the effective delivery of projects and programs. You will also be responsible for responding to briefs set by the Design function and providing services across a range of programmes and projects that Sustrans delivers. You will also be responsible for creating outputs that align with the design ambition of Sustrans Scotland Design function, focusing on best practice to deliver influential project proposals and visuals.

You will report into the Senior Urban Designer and will work collaboratively with a team of fellow designers and skilled individuals. You will build and manage internal and external relationships with project partners, clients, stake holders and communities.

Collaborating across the organisation including the UK Design, Engineering and Assurance functions, you will be working on the following programmes: Places for Everyone, Street Design/Pocket Places, Network Development and Behaviour Change.

We offer true hybrid working, a flexible mix of working from home and occasional travel to a nearby office hub.

About you

You will have experience in the production of technical drawings and specifications using design software and a working knowledge of best practice in inclusive design and healthy street design. Knowledge of health and safety management and CDM regulations is also required.

You will have proven verbal and written communication skills producing content for non-technical and technical audiences. Experience of working collaboratively and of working on projects with a significant level community engagement and Co-Design is also welcome. As an Urban Designer we expect you to have strong organisational skills and the ability to plan and prioritise your own workloads.

You should have either a Minimum HNC or equivalent in a relevant field (Urban Design, Landscape Architecture or Civil Engineering or an alternative, relevant and demonstrable specialism) plus 2 years' work experience, or 5 years' work experience in a relevant role / related field.

Sustrans has a long-term commitment to being a charity for everyone - reducing inequality, valuing diversity, enabling inclusion, and ensuring all people are treated with dignity and respect.
