A Fairer Start Mission
Our mission is to narrow the outcome gap between children growing up in disadvantage and the national average.
The circumstances of our childhood set us on a trajectory that affects the rest of our lives, with children born into disadvantage being far more likely to experience poorer health, lower earnings, a shorter life expectancy and lower levels of happiness than their peers. Taken together, the early years (ages 0–5) and secondary school period (ages 11–16) account for the development of 80 per cent of this divergence in life outcomes. We know that investing in early childhood can vastly improve outcomes for our poorest children. Yet progress to narrow the gap in early years has stalled, with trends once again worsening, and made even more stark by COVID-19.
Our goal is that, by 2030, the UK will have eliminated the school readiness gap between those born into deprivation and their peers, with similar gains at age 16 among students receiving free school meals.
The role
This role leads on the scoping, design and delivery of Nesta’s work in Scotland on our A Fairer Start mission. You will work proactively to deliver active projects as well as develop a pipeline of partnerships, collaborations and business development opportunities in support of our A Fairer Start mission in Scotland.
You'll take what you know from your existing experience of early years and inequalities to scope innovative projects to help achieve our mission goals. You'll lead on recruiting Scottish partners to work with to test those ideas, drawing from your existing networks in the field.
You will work with our Head of Nesta Scotland (based in Edinburgh) and Mission Director (based in London) as well as colleagues across Nesta’s innovation practices (like data science, design and behavioral science) to pull together multi-disciplinary teams to help improve local outcomes in our mission area and deliver demonstrable impact.
As the point person for this mission in Scotland, this is definitely a role for someone who likes getting their hands dirty and can combine researching with doing.
As a bridge between Nesta in Scotland and the central A Fairer Start mission team, this position will play a critical role in establishing effective ways of working between Nesta’s missions and the team in Scotland, working with the rest of the mission team to ensure the AFS mission has a strong presence in Scotland and that learning from projects in the rest of the UK informs our work in Scotland, and vice versa.
Alongside these core duties you will have the opportunity to support the mission more broadly, either through delivery of projects across the UK and/or through working as a mission representative for critical organisational priorities such as Nesta’s dedication to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

The Green Team was founded in 1995 to support young people to succeed in achieving the Duke of Edinburgh award. Since then, the team has grown significantly and now offers nine programmes along with corporate volunteering days and holiday activities. From one member of staff and a few volunteers, we now have 10 staff and over 50 volunteers.
The growth of the team since 1995 has been primarily driven by our current CEO, Penny Radway. The size of the organisation and number of programmes run mean that we believe the time is right to introduce a dual CEO approach. Penny will focus on CEO responsibilities for delivering our programmes and we are looking to recruit someone passionate about the outdoors and helping young people to become our CEO for corporate responsibility. We believe this represents an exceptional opportunity to help shape the Green Team strategy for the next decade, continue to grow the team and further enhance its reputation.
The role
To co-lead the charity promoting the mission, aims, values and objectives, be directly responsible for specific agreed areas of the charity’s corporate operations while overseeing and ensuring the success of these operations. To increase income generation, specifically unrestricted funds, enhance existing financial controls, and impact reporting. To also ensure there are clear and impactful communications, partnerships and marketing approaches for the development of the Green Team.
Work in partnership with the Co-CEO Programmes to advise the Trustees on the strategic direction of the organisation and to implement Board decisions. To ensure the sustainability of the Green Team, with a focus on increasing unrestricted funds to achieve longevity of the organisation.

The Role

You’ll take on Registered Manager responsibilities and will drive improvements in standards and quality and help us achieve our strategic aims.

About you
This role would be ideal for someone who is looking to develop their career in our sector in a more senior role, or a Registered Mental Health/Learning Disabilities Nurse with leadership experience.
What we need you to bring:-
- Extensive experience in a leadership role in the Health or Social Care setting
- Significant experience of managing and leading teams, with evidence of improving performance
- Experience of working with individuals with learning disabilities and Autism
- Knowledge of legislation and governance within the Social Care sector, specifically SSSC codes of practice and Health & Social Care Standards
- A sound understanding of professional boundaries, accountabilities, and responsibilities, particularly in relation to working with vulnerable people
- A proven solutions focused approach to problem solving with a flexible approach to emerging or changing circumstances
- SCQF level 9/10 in Social Services and Healthcare or equivalent

We’re looking for an experienced Patient Information Manager for an exciting new role. Excellent written communication, copy editing and proofing skills are essential for this post, and you will require to have previous experience in writing for a variety of different media channels. You will have the ability to convey complex medical information in accessible language and knowledge of the steps involved in producing information. You’ll have line management experience and the ability to review and give feedback on others’ work. Previous experience of working in cancer healthcare would be an advantage.

As Patient Information Manager you will have the opportunity to lead, develop and diversify the range and type of patient information we currently produce, working with a range of internal and external stakeholders. Managing the Patient Information Team, you will oversee the quality of all resources produced, ensuring compliance with recognised standards and internal brand requirements.
The Patient Information Manager will also be responsible for managing the information events team who hold digital and in person events for those affected by myeloma, working with the team to plan the programme for all events.
