Role

GET SETT SCOTLAND! Heritage Lottery Project

INTRODUCTION

Scottish Badgers is Scotland’s only charity dedicated to the protection of badgers and their habitats.

In recent years, demand for our support and services has grown, as more of the public engage in nature conservation issues, and as the development industries recognise their legal obligations to prevent harm to badgers. As such, our organisation is busy, enthusiastic and well-regarded within the NGO sector.

The charity’s main activities are in the realm of; giving information to the public; keeping accurate badger records for Scotland; and the provision of appropriate training and development to professional groups, and its own members.

For more detail go to www.scottishbadgers.org.uk

For 2022/25, Scottish Badgers has been awarded a grant by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver a sample survey of habitat areas for badger signs, which is a re-run of a 2006/09 survey, to add to research on the density and distribution of badgers in Scotland (Scottish Badger Distribution Survey – SBDS). This post is funded 3 days per. week by NLHF, and the priority for the next three years will be the recruitment of a diverse volunteer community to carry out the survey, working with appropriate other NGOs in Scotland

ABOUT THIS ROLE

As Scottish Badgers’ Community Engagement Officer, the successful candidate will:

·Work under the Progamme Manager to build a Scotland-wide base of suitable volunteers for the project, including SB’s own members, a diverse group of NGOs, and the wider public.

·Working with other SB experienced members, produce suitable training and survey material for volunteers.

·Set up both virtual and in-person training resources.

·Allocate survey sites to volunteers, mainly on a suitable geographical basis.

·Set up a volunteer support and retention system

·Manage the database of survey squares allocated, and the results

·Co-ordinate re-surveys as required

·Provide appropriate records, and contribute to various project team meetings

This is a home-based role with opportunities to travel across Scotland. There is scope for this role to develop over time, with the successful applicant becoming increasingly involved in the operational activity of the charity.

This role would suit someone who wants to make a real difference to the protection of an iconic species in Scotland. The breadth of stakeholder engagement and public contact associated with the role is likely to appeal to a candidate who enjoys meeting new people and building networks within the Scotland conservation community.
