Role

Who are we:

We are a non-for-profit organisation who teaches fun and accessible languages to older adults in care homes, day centres, and retirement communities across Scotland. In addition to our outreach classes, we also have a small language hub where we offer community classes to local residents in Glasgow. We do this as recent research shows that speaking a second language can postpone the effects of dementia by up to 5 years. We therefore use foreign languages as a vehicle to empower the minds of our learners, proving that it is never too late to learn something new.

Who we are looking for: We have two different strands: community and hub tutors:

Community tutors:

We are looking for compassionate, creative, and driven speakers of French, Italian, German, or Spanish to teach SQA certified language classes to older adults in care homes and day centres across Scotland. It is based on a contract driven basis to teach sessions of up to 10 weeks. Each session will be one hour per week. Total teaching will be no more than 4 hours a week. The classes take place between 9-5 from Monday to Friday. Due to doing outreach projects having a clean driving license and access to a car is necessary.

Hub tutors:

We are looking for experienced, creative, and motivated speakers of Spanish, French, Italian, or German to teach evening classes both online and in our hub in Shawlands, Glasgow. The classes are taught to up to 12 students and each session last 1.5 hours. The blocks of classes are ten weeks in total and we run four of them every year. Total teaching time will be around 4-6 hours a week depending on demand.

Benefits: In addition to having the chance to work with some inspiring students, challenging stigma and helping in the fight against dementia you also get the following:

  • The living wage
  • PVG Certificate
  • Reference
  • Teaching training
