Introduction

The Development Officer’s role is to support the development of the social, economic and environmental aspirations for Unst and its residents. It will focus on some specific projects that have already been identified through the Unst Community Action Plan (CAP) and Community Housing Needs Assessment, both conducted in 2025, along with progressing further Unst Partnership (UP) aims and objectives.

The successful candidate will work for Unst Partnership Ltd (UP), either as an Employee or on a Self-employed basis, although they will also work directly with other community organisations in Unst.

Work base: Unit 1, Hagdale, Baltasound, Unst. Very occasionally travel to meetings in other parts of Shetland.

Hybrid working is considered with this post.

Regular updates at UP meetings with Directors will be required which take place in person in Unst and are predominantly held in evenings.

This job is offered as a one year fixed contract starting from on 1st April 2026 – 31st March 2027 with the opportunity to extend this for a further two years.

Hours: 25 hours per week average (with variations agreed in advance)., 52 week year if Employee, 48 week year if Self-Employed.

Flexible working will be required, including evenings and occasional weekend work. The pattern of hours and times will be discussed with the successful candidate.

About the Role

We’re seeking an experienced and motivated individual to develop our policy work across the devolved nations, with a particular focus on Scotland. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the health policy landscape, and have the ability to influence decision makers, ensuring the voices of people affected by cardiomyopathy are heard in relevant policy discussions.

As Freelance Senior Policy and Public Affairs Officer (Devolved Nations) you’ll be responsible for the development and delivery of impactful policy and influencing strategies. This role will play a critical part in improving the lives of people affected by cardiomyopathy by shaping public policy, raising awareness, and influencing key decision-makers. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in policy, public affairs, or a related field, along with strong stakeholder engagement skills.

As a part-time freelance role, responsibilities will be phased and prioritised over the course of the contract. The position is offered at 0.6 to 0.8 FTE, depending on the candidate’s availability.

About the Role

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and proactive Welfare and Compliance Manager to lead the delivery of safe, inclusive environments across athletics in Scotland. Reporting to the Head of Coaching and Welfare, you will act as the organisation’s primary contact for safeguarding, welfare and compliance matters. Working in close collaboration with partners such as Disclosure Scotland, Children First and UK Athletics you will oversee the ongoing development and implementation of modern and effective safeguarding and welfare practices across the organisation and wider sport.

You will be responsible for the provision of ongoing guidance, support and training for the network of Club Welfare Officers, contributing to the development of policies and procedures and ensuring compliance with the relevant legislation and standards.

This new role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, embedding a proactive culture of safeguarding and welfare which ensures that every individual has a safe and positive experience in athletics.

Staff

scottishathletics employs 33 members of staff and 23 Club Together Officers.

Place of Work

Hybrid working. The scottishathletics office is based at Laurie Liddell Clubhouse, 42 Peffermill Road, Edinburgh, EH16 5LL. scottishathletics also has an office within the Emirates Arena, 1000 London Road, Glasgow, G40 3HG.

Salary

The starting salary offered for the post will be £33,000. Annual pay awards will be made in accordance with the salary review procedures agreed by the scottishathletics Board of Directors.

Hours of work

The person appointed will be expected to work for 37 hours per-week. Due to the nature of the post, there may be occasions where there is a requirement to work in the evening and at weekends. scottishathletics operates a qualifying group pension scheme for auto-enrolment purposes and will match the successful candidates’ contribution up to a maximum of 6% of salary, including the legal minimum contributions required.

The annual leave entitlement for this post is 25 days (pro rata), increasing to 30 days after five years’ service. In addition, the public holiday entitlement is 10.5 days (pro rata).

Travel and Subsistence

The post holder may occasionally be required to travel to meetings within Scotland and occasionally in the UK. Travel and subsistence will be reimbursed at scottishathletics’ current rates.

Probationary Period

All new members of staff will serve a six-month probationary period before their appointment is confirmed.

About the Role

Reporting to the Estates Officer, you will join a new 18-month pilot Estates Team delivering estate services, initially across Glasgow. As part of a team of operatives, you will carry out practical environmental tasks including bulk uplifts, graffiti removal, litter picking and small scale grounds maintenance such as grass cutting. This is the first time WSHA has brought these services in house and the pilot period will be reviewed on completion. You will play a key role in maintaining clean, safe and attractive neighbourhoods while helping shape the future delivery of estate services. As a pilot service, the Estates Team will evolve over time and the duties and priorities of the role may change within the scope and level of the post.

PPE, uniforms and all necessary equipment will be provided. You will also receive full training, including health and safety, systems and task specific training, to support you in delivering a high-quality service.

You will play a key role in:

  • Carrying out bulk uplift and clearance of waste from communal areas and estates
  • Undertaking litter picking and general environmental clean ups, including dog fouling.
  • Removal of graffiti using approved methods and materials
  • Carrying out small scale grounds maintenance tasks (e.g. grass cutting, hedge trimming, basic tidy ups)
  • Loading, transport and disposal of waste directly at licensed facilities in line with duty of care requirements

About You

  • Ability to carry out physically demanding tasks safely, including lifting and manual handling, in line with health and safety requirements.
  • IT skills, including the ability to use a smartphone or tablet to complete work tasks.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to interact with customers in a positive, respectful and professional manner.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience of practical outdoor work, such as environmental services, grounds maintenance, labouring, or similar physically active roles.
  • Comfortable working outdoors throughout the year and in varying weather conditions
