This exciting post offers a unique opportunity to work with Young Carers within school, home & community based settings. The role of the Young Carer Support Worker will be to support young carers in making informed choices around issues that are important to them, through one to one, group work sessions & respite.

You will be offering and completing Young Carers Statements (Assessments), developing support plans, providing advice and information, training, and peer support to help young carers with their caring role.

Young carers are supported through a range of measures to alleviate the caring role and your role will be to work closely with schools, partner agencies and family members to ensure they are able to be a young person first and foremost.

You will be active at providing support and encouragement, helping them to overcome challenges and /or barriers working towards goals to improve their learning, skills and personal development. Offering guidance, rights based information, creating learning opportunities. You will be developing support plans, providing advice and information, training and peer support. Your role will be to work closely with schools, partner agencies and family members.

The Service

LinkLiving is a trauma-informed Scottish health and wellbeing charity that supports people of all ages to overcome the negative impacts of trauma, mental health, inequality, and isolation. Our Link Academy SQA training centre provides a wide range of accredited and non-accredited courses that help people develop new skills. The service works hard and creatively to maintain the early engagement of participants. We support people by offering mental health and wellbeing programmes, independent living skills and a wide range of qualifications to support their progression including volunteering, employability, tenancy, youth work and leadership award qualifications

The Job

The purpose of the job is to recruit, train and support a team of volunteers who have an interest in, or have been affected by homelessness. As Volunteer Peer Educators, they will deliver a range workshops in Fife high schools, focusing on homelessness prevention, independent living skills and wellbeing. From experience, we know that pupils are more likely to listen to peers with lived experience than a teacher or adult sharing similar information.

You will manage volunteers by providing training and support in their role while also supporting their personal development and future aspirations. As a Project Worker, you will work with local schools to implement the programme as part of their provision. You will also develop relationships with other agencies and actively promote Linkliving's programmes and services.

About You

We are looking for a dedicated and dynamic individual with a strong educational background and a passion for volunteer management to join our team. You will possess a good standard of education, with standard grade passes (or equivalent) in core subjects such as English and Maths.

Your experience in coordinating training courses will be crucial, and you will bring a wealth of knowledge in best practices in volunteer management, particularly with an understanding of Investing in Volunteers. You will have a solid grasp of the Trauma Skilled Practice Framework (NES Framework) and have demonstrated experience working with individuals with complex needs or backgrounds.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is essential, alongside a comprehensive understanding of the employability sector and volunteering initiatives. Your effective communication skills, both written and oral, will allow you to convey information clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences.

You will have experience in developing and delivering training programmes and be knowledgeable about evaluation methods to ensure their effectiveness. A non-judgemental attitude and a willingness to embrace diversity are core values you hold, enabling you to work empathetically with volunteers from various backgrounds.

Adaptability and the ability to integrate into new environments quickly are key, as is the capacity to work openly and honestly within a team setting. You will be adept at prioritising and planning both your workload and that of your team members.

Building and nurturing relationships with other voluntary organisations, employability networks, and statutory agencies will be second nature to you. Additionally, you must have the ability to drive and be willing to travel between services as required.

MECOPP is Scotland’s leading Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) carers’ organisation providing a variety of care and support services to carers from BME and other marginalised communities.

The postholder will join a established Community Health Team – ‘Community Health Matters’ – to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities amongst Scotland’s Gypsy/Traveller community. The Community Health Team is part of a wider programme of work supporting the Gypsy/Traveller community which includes carer support, support for the cared for person, financial resilience, addressing food insecurity, men and women’s engagement and building digital capacity.

Our newly established community mental health and wellbeing team sits within the wider remit of the Gypsy/Traveller Community Health Team. At full complement the mental health and wellbeing team will comprise of: 1 x team leader (children & young people focus); 2.5 x family support workers (1 x adults/older people + 1.5 x children/young people). The development worker for adults and older people is already in post.

Our ambition is to pilot a confidential and trusted Scottish-wide service, employing people who understand/have empathy with the culture and traditions of the community. This service will be accessible to young Gypsy/Travellers and their families wherever they are living and available online, via telephone and face to face. It will link to local specialist services as appropriate. It will promote accessible and culturally appropriate information about mental health and well-being to Gypsy/Travellers and provide a single point of contact so that when young people move their service provider would remain a constant and involved presence to aid transitions.

Lead on the development of a pilot training programme for mental health practitioners.

We anticipate that significant travel may be required so the location of the post is flexible although some attendance at the office will be required.

Delivery of all tasks and activities will be commensurate with the number of hours secured for the post.
