We are looking for Trustees to join our Board

Our Association oversees and promotes a diverse range of activities within the Southside Community Centre. Situated in central Edinburgh, the Centre serves the diverse local community. Its activities also attract individuals from across the city and South-East Scotland. Supported by major grant-funding from a broad range of organisations, including sizable financial support from the National Lottery, the Association is currently extending the use of the Centre’s facilities to more community activities. A major opportunity has emerged to develop the Centre as part of the recently issued Community Centre Strategy issued by the City of Edinburgh Council. We now wish to take advantage of this Council initiative to support a greater range of ways with which to enhance the well-being of the community.

The Association is led by a Board of Trustees. We are seeking to recruit a small number of motivated individuals to help govern our growing charity. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from those with specialist knowledge, skills and experience in:

• Community learning, development and stakeholder engagement
• Business or legal background
• Governance and leadership
• Strategic planning
• Finance

This is an exciting time to join our charity as we have celebrated various successes over the past two years including: recruiting our first Chief Executive, extending our community centre opening hours to include weekends, expanding the range of services we deliver, and significantly increasing the amount of external grant funding we receive. We look forward to continuing to achieve further success as we continue to develop our services, including re-launching our new in-house community café and developing a long-term strategic plan.

We are keen that our Board reflects our diverse local community and we therefore welcome individuals from all minority and disadvantaged groups.

This is therefore a challenging and rewarding time to join our charity as we look towards the future. Over coming months, we need to: agree a new lease arrangements with our landlord, City of Edinburgh Council, explore and decide upon the long-term future of how our building is managed, while continuing to sustain and grow the range of services we currently provide.

Shakti is a feminist Black Minority Ethnic voluntary organisation which offers information, emotional/practical support and refuge/temporary accommodation to all Black Minority Ethnic (BME) women and their children, who are experiencing or fleeing domestic abuse.

• Salary: £26,810 per annum (£16,086 pro-rata) + 10% pension

Key Requirements: The post holder must be a bilingual speaker in a BME community language, preferably Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali or Arabic. The post holder will support Black and Minority Ethnic women, their children and young people experiencing and/or fleeing domestic abuse or forced marriage. Applicants ideally have a minimum of 2 years’ experience of working with Black and Minority Ethnic Communities; an understanding of the legislative and cultural issues surrounding domestic abuse/forced marriage. All applicants must have a minimum of SVQ Level III in Social Care or relevant qualification such as degree in Social Work or Community Education.

We are looking for 2 Youth Work Leads to deliver youth sessions, clubs and activities for our young people and families within YoMo services across Glasgow the delivery will be varied and will always be driven by the needs of young people and the community.

There will also be the remit of devising and implementing new projects and clubs as guided by funding requirements and service user’s needs. These will include building and creating programs that provide accreditation through youth and SQA awards that build skills for young people’s future employment.

You will work in partnership with local organisations, social work and schools and build up strong positive community links. You will work to enhance the lives of young people by ensuring activities are provided to develop their mental, emotional, physical and social well-being needs.

You will have the responsibility of helping with fundraising drives and initiatives.

You will also be committed to ongoing personal development and undertake training or other professional development activities as required.

All other reasonable duties will be required to be undertaken as and when required and agreed with the Project Manager.

Full time post 35 hours per week, with hours worked varying over days, nights and weekend duties as required.

Part time post 25 hours per week, with hours worked varying over days, nights and weekend duties as required.

Purpose of the Role

The Social Enterprise Co-ordinator will grow income by improving how we use the building, developing events, building corporate links and supporting new commercial ideas. The role will work with the CEO to turn ideas into action, strengthen sustainability and support wider community work.

Main Duties

Income Generation and Social Enterprise Development

• Develop and manage plans to grow income across events, building hire, sponsorship and corporate support.
• Work with the CEO to create, test and deliver new commercial ideas.
• Track income and costs and prepare simple monthly updates.
• Look for ways to link income activity with other programmes, including digital and e-sports.

Events (including parties)

• Plan and co-ordinate a calendar of events such as themed sessions, cinema nights, family activities and other opportunities.
• Manage bookings, enquiries and customer information.
• Support sessional staff, keeping clear rotas and communication.
• Ensure all events run safely and follow organisational standards.

Building Use and Room Hire

• Promote the building for meetings, training sessions, conferences and community activities.
• Respond to enquiries and keep an organised booking system.
• Develop simple hire packages, pricing and clear information for users.
• Balance external bookings with internal programme needs.

Corporate Support and Partnerships

• Build relationships with businesses to increase sponsorship, donations and in-kind support.
• Develop partnership offers that align with corporate social responsibility aims.
• Attend networking opportunities to promote the organisation.
• Work with the CEO on sponsorship packages linked to programmes such as e-sports and youth work.

Marketing and Promotion (working with the Marketing Lead)

• Provide information, ideas and content to support marketing activity.
• Work closely with the marketing lead to ensure accurate and timely promotion.
• Share customer insights to help improve communication.

Operational Support

• Help develop systems and processes for events and building activity.
• Ensure work follows health and safety, safeguarding and organisational standards.
• Act as a keyholder when required.

Required Skills and Experience

Essential:

• Experience in events, hospitality, income generation or similar roles.
• Strong organisational skills.
• Confident communicator able to build good relationships.
• Ability to work evenings or weekends.
• Basic budgeting and reporting skills.
• Able to work independently.

Desirable:

• Experience in social enterprise or community work.
• Experience with booking systems or rotas.
• Experience engaging with businesses or sponsorship.
• Understanding of event operations or licensing.
• Basic understanding of marketing.
