For decades, some children in residential care in Scotland were failed by those entrusted to look after them. Scotland has taken steps to face up to the failings of the past by establishing a redress scheme for survivors of historical child abuse in care. The Redress for Survivors (Historical Child Abuse in Care) (Scotland) Act 2021, legislated for the establishment of a survivor focused route to redress for historical child abuse in care, and in some circumstances, their next of kin.

Scottish Ministers are now looking to appoint additional panel members to Redress Scotland.

About the role

Panel members will be expected to uphold the highest standards of impartiality and objectivity in making determinations, to help foster trust in the work of Scotland’s Redress Scheme, with Redress Scotland, and survivors. Panel members will be fully supported in the role and will receive training to develop a good understanding of, and be closely guided by, statutory guidance, including the assessment framework.

We welcome applications from people who have considerable experience from a range of areas including health, law, justice, social work, and human rights. Additionally, individuals with an understanding of the Scottish care system and child development, or specialist knowledge of complex trauma, are particularly encouraged to apply.

• A track record of delivering evidence based decision making
• Working effectively with others
• Excellent communication skills
• Expertise working in emotional and psychological trauma, law, social work, health, or other relevant fields

Additional desirable criteria

• Resilience and self-awareness
• Experience of working on a decision making panel, tribunal or committee setting

Time commitment

Due to the nature of the panel member role, the weekly time commitment will vary. However, it is anticipated that a commitment to attend at least 12 panel sitting days per year will be required. Additionally, there will be a need to allocate extra days each month for pre and post panel work, training, and other relevant meetings. We estimate that these activities will require a commitment of at least 38 days annually. There is scope to work additional days, up to a maximum of 180 days per year, depending on your overall availability.

Remuneration and expenses

The appointment is remunerated at a daily rate of £390 (non-pensionable). Travel and subsistence costs, as well as reasonable receipted dependant carer and childcare expenses, incurred in relation to the work of Redress Scotland, will be reimbursed.

Location

Redress Scotland is a digital first public body and has no office base. Most of Redress Scotland’s work is conducted remotely, however some ‘in-person’ meetings will be required at times to carry out the full range of panel member activities.

A Treasurer is being sought by the Southside Community Centre Association SCIO

An opportunity has arisen to join our Board of Trustees as Treasurer during an exciting time of development in which we are investing in new services and facilities, but also during a time of challenge as we focus on achieving a sustainable future.

As Treasurer you will support the Board to help manage its financial resources. Although you will take the lead in overseeing strong financial management, you will be aided by our Chief Executive and our very supportive accountants, as well as your fellow Trustees.

Key tasks as Treasurer

• Provide a monthly update to the Board on our financial position
• Promote oversight of our financial procedures and practices.
• Liaise with our Chief Executive and accountants.
• With the accountants oversee preparation of our annual financial statement.
• Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and good practice in conjunction with our accountants.

About you

• Enthusiasm to support our active Community Centre.
• Available to attend our monthly board meetings (in person).
• Strong attention to the detail of financial arrangements.
• Experience of serving as a Treasurer not essential, but experience in financial management would be an advantage.
• Good communication and team working skills.

About us

We became a two tier Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation in 2023. Our charity is led by a Board consisting of nine Trustees (eight appointed by our members, and one co-opted by Trustees. We have over one hundred members. Monthly (in person) meetings of our Board are held in our community centre, with occasional additional meetings as required for working groups and / or sub committees.

The Board is supported in its work by a Chief Executive, appointed in late 2023. Our staffing compliment consist of three part time Community Centre Assistants (Facilities) who support our weekend opening, alongside three part time Activity Workers who deliver various project work within the centre.

As the leaseholder of Southside Community Centre, we work in partnership with the building’s owner, City of Edinburgh Council, to provide a community centre which is safe, inclusive, well managed and which meets the needs & aspirations of the communities it serves.

Our community centre consists of two general purpose rooms, a large hall and a community café, all of which are available for community use seven days per week. Our spaces are used by many regular and occasional let holders for a range of uses such as English language classes, martial arts, community meetings, fencing, drama and more!

• Have oversight of Pensions Committee assurance models and compliance with requirements imposed in relation to the scheme and by the Pension Regulator.
• Ensure the integrity of financial information and that financial controls and systems of risk management are robust and defensible.
• Consider any reports produced for the Pensions Committee, including the annual report, fund performance and administration, actuarial report and valuations and the fund strategy.
