The Junction is an award-winning charity that takes a holistic approach towards young people’s health and well-being. Our vision is for all young people to achieve their full potential.

We work with 12-21 year olds in North-East Edinburgh offering one-to-one support, counselling and creative projects to support their wellbeing by helping them explore their life choices.

Trustee opportunities

We are looking for committed individuals to join our Board of Trustees. This is an incredible opportunity to make a difference with The Junction and build your skills. We are currently recruiting for Trustees to join our board from October 2024, with a particular interest in candidates with experience in the following areas:

• HR
• Charitable / third sector
• Marketing
• Fundraising

We are looking for candidates with Trustee/Board experience, who are committed to our values and in supporting young people in the community, with an understanding of the issues affecting them as well as the opportunities and challenges of the third sector landscape.

The most important attributes of trustees joining us include a willingness to ask questions, share our values of equality, transparency and community as well as their time commitment to the role. If this sounds like you, we would love to hear from you.

Role responsibilities

Duties/tasks for the year include:

• Attend 4 board meetings a year (quarterly)
• Attend or dial-in to 4 informal meetings with board members
• Contribute to a sub-groups that meets roughly 4 times - a team of staff and board members
• Attend 2 Development Days with staff and/or trustees (usually but not always a Saturday in Spring and Autumn)

LAYC is recruiting a Project Worker to support the delivery of accredited learning and youth awards, with the network of community-based youth and children’s Member Groups within Edinburgh and the Lothians.

The post will be based at LAYC and will have a Lothian wide remit.

The post will be fixed for an initial period of 2 years at 18 hours per week on a salary scale of £26,788 - £30,751 pro rata, plus access to a 7% employers contribution pension.

We are seeking a qualified and compassionate mental health and wellbeing worker.

Deliver face-to-face services for children and young people from armed forces families in a boarding school environment.

Provide essential mental health support, promote emotional wellbeing, and empower young people to navigate challenges faced through our Lighthouse Project at Queen Victoria School (Dunblane), funded by the Veterans Foundation. You will be responsible for planning and delivery of one-to-one, peer group, and drop-in sessions. You will work directly with young people to co-produce mental health and wellbeing resources, to empower young people to become wellbeing ambassadors and support staff and parents to enhance understanding of many relevant topics.

About the Lighthouse project

The Lighthouse project was coproduced with young people from Queen Victoria School in recognition of the unique challenges of forces life and boarding. It has been delivered as a pilot for the past year and has shown success in supporting young people to maintain or improve their mental health and wellbeing. With generous funding from The Veterans Foundation the project Forces Children Scotland will continue the delivery of the Lighthouse Project for a minimum of a further two years.

In this unique role, the post holder will be employed by Forces Children Scotland but based and embedded in Queen Victoria School which is located in Dunblane. The school delivers board and education for children and young people from aged 11-18 years who have parents serving in the armed forces across the United Kingdom and overseas.

About the person we’re looking for

You will need an undergraduate degree in psychology, mental health, social work, education, youth work, or equivalent qualification/experience to apply. Moreover, you require at least 2 years’ experience working in mental health service delivery/support.

Here’s a selection of further essential criteria:

• Experience in working collaboratively and an ability to engage with children and young people and work effectively in distressing and challenging circumstances,.
• Experience in coproducing projects with children and young people in a mental health and wellbeing context.
• Experience in developing and delivering mental health and wellbeing support for children and young.
• Experience in evaluating the impact of mental health and wellbeing.
• Detailed understanding of Safeguarding and its application in practice.
• A strong understanding of trauma and adversity in childhood and the impact this can have on mental health and wellbeing.

To contribute to the delivery of LGBT+ services with young people across Midlothian. This involves supporting the development and co-facilitation of MYPAS run LGBT+ groups with young people.

This will include delivering:

• Accessible health and wellbeing focused group programmes with LGBT+ young people living or accommodated in Midlothian. The programmes will be young person led and aim to reduce social isolation, improve mental health, increase confidence, resilience and self-esteem

• A platform for LGBT+ young people in Midlothian, through a social action participation group, to be involved in and create local events and initiatives to promote inclusion within the wider LGBT+ community and the wider communities of Midlothian. Initiatives will include engagement with decision makers.

We are looking for someone who has experience of working with young people in a range of settings and has a good knowledge of the issues affecting LGBT+ young people.
