At Independent Advocacy Perth & Kinross (IAPK), our advocates are independent from organisations that provide services to the people we support. We do not provide any other services other than independent advocacy, and our advocates have no close ties to family or friends of the individual. This means that we are as free as possible from conflict of interest and can freely speak up for the person.

We are committed to the individual’s voice and wishes being heard; we do not express our own view only that of the individual. Even when a person is considered not to have capacity, we still work to seek out that individual’s point of view.

We want to hear from you if you have a dedication to human rights and ensuring they are accessible within your local community, every day, for everyone. You do not have to have previous board experience to join, however, some experience in Education, Governance, Finance, Legal, Human Resources and/or Strategy & Development would be essential. At this time, we are particularly looking for expertise in Finance and HR.

Our next trustee would also be someone that would uphold our values, respecting that we are Partner-Led and Independent, pursuing Honesty and the Courage to advocate for our partners’ Human Rights, leading to their Empowerment.

We are looking for a dynamic and strategic person to implement and take forward our newly reviewed Financial Wellbeing Service.

At Scottish Huntington’s Association we are entering the second year of Standing Tall: A Strategy For Growth 2023 – 28, designed to transform the care and support of Huntington’s families. The launch of our strategy followed two years of expansion in specialist teams, increased funding, a rise in media engagement, and growth in parliamentary support for our work.

You will be enthusiastic, motivated and take great pride in the work you do. With significant experience in delivering advice services and strong people management skills, you will lead our new team to deliver welfare rights, money and future planning advice to families impacted by

Huntington’s disease in Scotland. By working in partnership with our Head of Services and the Extended Leadership Team, you will be key to the delivery of a new and sustainable Financial Wellbeing Service.

People impacted by Huntington’s disease need specialist services to cope with a severe and complex disease, the impact on families and a lack of awareness amongst health and social care providers and the wider public.

Scottish Huntington’s Association is the only charity in the country exclusively dedicated to providing expert and personalised support for those impacted by Huntington’s disease.

Our support reduces unnecessary hospital admissions; supports carers and other family members; lowers household poverty; and alleviates wellbeing risks to children and young people living in Huntington’s families.

We are commissioned by NHS Boards and Health and Social Care Partnerships throughout the country to share our expertise with front line staff and build support for improved services and higher standards of care for every family impacted by this devastating disease.

About Huntington’s disease

Huntington’s disease is caused by an inherited faulty gene that damages the brain over time. People with the disease can eventually lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink and care for themselves, requiring specialist support from those who understand the condition.

The disease is genetic, meaning it is passed down from one generation to the next. It therefore impacts entire families over generations rather than individuals alone. Anyone with a parent who has Huntington’s has a 50% risk of inheriting the condition from them.

Around 800 people in Scotland are living with the symptoms of Huntington’s disease right now. A further 3,200 are estimated to be at risk of developing Huntington’s disease as a result of inheriting the faulty gene.

Organised, motivated and a confident communicator, you’ll be responsible for driving income and building relationships throughout the East Coast of Scotland, to ensure we have the funds needed to deliver our specialist services for every family impacted by this devastating disease. We welcome applicants from a variety of backgrounds including (but not limited to) account management, marketing, fundraising, event management, or sales, and candidates who are based in any of the following areas: Aberdeenshire, Dundee and Angus, Edinburgh and the Lothians, Fife or Perthshire.

From supporter stewardship, event management, delivering inspiring presentations, and managing volunteers, no week will be the same. The Community and Events Fundraising Officer (East Coast of Scotland) will be joining a hard-working and talented fundraising team, working closely with our Senior Community, Event & Individual Giving Fundraising Officer, Community and Events Fundraising Officer (West Coast of Scotland), our SHA Communications team, as well as the wider SHA team.

We are looking for an engaging, passionate and tenacious person who can deliver strong, cost effective and sustainable income growth for the charity, along with good copy writing, admin and organisational skills, experienced at developing relationships, and can manage a busy and varied workload. This is a chance for you to channel your varied skills, qualities, and passion for relationship building to improve the lives of families impacted by Huntington’s disease in Scotland.

You will work from home with periodic travel throughout the East Coast of Scotland. There will also be occasional travel required for organisation-wide meetings.

This role will require occasional weekend and evening working for which time off in lieu will be agreed.

In addition to a competitive salary, we offer benefits including flexible working practices, and a generous leave allowance totalling 37 days (25 days Annual leave and 12 days public holidays). Upon 5 completed years of service, you will receive an extra day for each completed year up to a maximum of 5 days, and the the opportunity to opt into our competitive pension scheme.
