HMS Unicorn & The Unicorn Preservation Society for succession planning and growth is seeking several quality trustees

Background

The Unicorn Preservation Society, known as UPS, is an exceptional charity responsible for a unique and precious 200-year-old heritage asset: HMS Unicorn.

The Society is in one of the most exciting phases in the history of the ship readying it for migration to a sustainable, secure berth. UPS has raised c£1m funding various preliminary works and investigations. These preliminary works and investigations were essential to develop the evidence needed for applications for major funding that will ultimately see the ship as an integral part of Dundee’s exciting water-front development.

During 2023, the Society was awarded major funding of more than £1m to undertake hull significant strengthening work as a precursor to being moved into her new home.

Who we are looking for

We are seeking a new Trustee to become our Chair elect. There are four essential duties:

• Provide leadership, be an effective strategist and a good networker;

• Promote the Society effectively to all stakeholders and prospective stakeholders;

• Ensure that the Board operates effectively; and

• Promote good standards of governance inside and outside the “boardroom”.

We are also seeking up to 3 further Trustees. Applicants for the role of trustee with experience in the following areas will be prioritised:

o Finance, project finance or financial services;

o Architecture, large scale projects, regeneration or engineering; and

o Entrepreneur, experienced and connected business person.

We would like applicants to:

• Empathise with the vision, mission and aims of the organisation;

• Demonstrate a willingness and ability to devote the necessary time and effort;

• Have experience of exercising sound and independent judgement;

• Be able to think and apply knowledge creatively and strategically;

• Keep themselves and the charity mission-focused;

• Be able to analyse and evaluate information and other evidence in the execution of their duties.

Time commitment and remuneration

Trustees are not remunerated. In 2024, the Board of trustees plans to meet four times in the year with an additional awayday (in person). In addition, trustees will be asked to join at least one of the Board Committees with a similar time commitment.
