Role
Due to the imminent retiral of its long-serving current Director, this forward-thinking organisation seeks to appoint a proactive, experienced, self-motivated professional to lead it through an important period of change. The successful candidate will use their proven clinical, managerial, and leadership skills to sustain and deliver the charity’s core counselling service while imaginatively developing the organisation in the coming years. With a lead role in the future of such a unique and highly respected organisation, the new Director will help to change people’s lives and deliver affordable therapy to a wide diversity of people.
The PF Director has both clinical and organisational responsibilities, ranging from managing the flow of clients from application to ending, across to the financial sustainability and future development of services. Although the staff team is small, the role also includes the recruitment and management of a large and diverse team of volunteer counsellors.
We are a leading provider of practice placements for students studying counselling and psychotherapy in Scotland. The Director therefore also maintains relationships with a range of local and national institutions providing professional counselling training.
PF Counselling Service
The PF Counselling Service is a COSCA Recognised voluntary counselling agency which offers both short and long term therapy to people over the age of 18, irrespective of their ability to pay, or where they live in Edinburgh and the Lothians. A registered Scottish charity, it was established in 1986 and is now the largest independent voluntary counselling service in Edinburgh.
Based in south Edinburgh, the PF offers over 15,000 sessions of counselling a year to over 750 clients, provided by around 100 professionally trained volunteer counsellors. An experienced and active Board of Trustees provides governance and support to the staff team of five, which is responsible for all aspects of delivering the service.

As a member of the senior management team, the Assistant Director (Programmes and Participation) is instrumental in leading Together’s strategic initiatives across a broad spectrum of programme development, with a significant focus on enhancing the rights and participation of babies, toddlers, and early years children. This role is pivotal in supporting the Director by managing essential areas of operational and strategic responsibility, facilitating the effective implementation of Together’s strategic priorities, and ensuring programmes are impactful and aligned with organisational goals.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Overseeing the development of Together’s programmes, leading innovative initiatives and supporting Together's Director as a spokesperson on key children’s rights matters.
- Developing and managing fundraising strategies, building and maintaining strong relationships with funders and stakeholders, and overseeing the financial management of all programmes and participation budgets.
- Enhancing children’s participation initiatives and implementing participatory practices across all programme activities.
- Management and mentoring of the Programmes and Participation team, encouraging a culture of high performance, collaboration, and continuous learning within the team.
Throughout the role, the post-holder will be expected to involve Together’s membership – including children and young people – whenever possible and appropriate.

The current Director of Live Music Now Scotland (LMNS) was appointed at the date of its founding in 1984 and has led LMN’s activities in Scotland ever since. In March 2025, she will step back from that position and the Board is now looking to appoint a Chief Executive.

You will come with experience of working with volunteers. You will help to deliver our services, campaigns and events – leading on volunteers’ recruitment, logistics, stewardship and communications. You will be playing a key part in helping to look after and grow our volunteers, ensure volunteering processes are smooth and efficient, and identify volunteering needs and roles. You will enjoy taking your own initiative but also working as a part of the team. You will be required to travel around our various locations. The Butterfly Trust is the lead agency providing social support for people affected by Cystic Fibrosis throughout Scotland. We provide a comprehensive and diverse range of outreach services for all ages of people with Cystic Fibrosis and their families across Scotland.
We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic and approachable individual to join our team, with an appropriate skillset to add value and who has a commitment to continued professional development. We will provide both in-house and external training to ensure all of our team develop their skills and knowledge to fulfil their role to the best of their ability.
The successful candidate will have good communication, problem-solving and organisational skills and they will be able to motivate others and work with people at all levels.
The main duties for this role include:
- To take responsibility for delivery direct one-to one support for children affected by Cystic Fibrosis, and the supervision of the volunteer befrienders providing some of this the support
- To provide direct support for children and their carers and to deal with complex issues
- To work in collaboration with specialist medical personnel to ensure provision of professional and integrated medical and social support services
- To liaise, when necessary, with Social Care Services, Local Authorities and other relevant specialist agencies
- To contribute to recruitment, selection, induction and training of volunteers who provide outreach support and ensure volunteer befrienders are skilled to respond to issues affecting people living with Cystic Fibrosis and their carers
- To maintain communication and information systems to ensure good practice and effective monitoring, maintain accurate records and provide monthly reports to the Managing Director
Full driving licence and a car is essential.
For this regulated work the successful candidate will be required to gain/maintain PVG scheme membership which will be paid for by the Trust.
