Scottish Child Law Centre (SCLC) description

The Scottish Child Law Centre has been providing free expert legal advice on children’s rights and child law across Scotland for 32 years.

Strategic objectives

Focussing on those who need us most to:

  • Deliver free and confidential legal advice to children and young people and those who care for and support them.
  • Educate and inform children and young people and those who support them of their rights.
  • Influence legal, systemic and policy change using the data and evidence gathered from delivering advice and training.

The Centre is going through an exciting period of transition and over the next two years will be building on our advice provision, including outreach work, and working co-productively alongside those that we exist to support to design services to reach those who need us most.

Purpose of the role:

A communications role is key to the Centre achieving its vision for all children and young people growing up in Scotland to have their rights respected, protected, and fulfilled. Increasing the profile of the Centre and our work will ensure that more people and organisations have knowledge of children’s rights and our services which will help to realise these rights.

Working with children and young people to ensure that our services are being led by those that we exist to serve and empower with the law. Ensuring that we are reaching those who are the most disadvantaged in society and need us most.

Sharing learning and good practice to increase understanding and promote discussions around children’s rights and how they can be respected and protected. Enhancing cross-sectoral and collaborative working and supporting changes to policy and practice.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Setting up a young person’s advisory group.
  • Working with the Director to develop a communication strategy.
  • Outreach work with children and young people as part of the development of new services.
  • Engaging with groups that do not currently access our services to find out the barriers and how these can be addressed.
  • Manging the Centre’s social media.
  • Exploring different channels for engaging and educating young people on their rights and creating accessible digital content.

Knowledge and experience:

  • A proven track record in delivering innovative engagement work with a wide range of people and communities, including children and young people.
  • An experienced communications officer with the ability to communicate complex legal information in a clear and simple way to a wide range of people and organisations.
  • Experience of managing a variety of social media channels.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how to engage children and young people through digital media.
  • Excellent people skills with an ability to build positive and productive working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Monitoring of the communications budget line and that activities are delivered within budget.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of communications activities to ensure a cycle of continuous improvement.

Qualifications, skills and personal attributes:

  • Highly developed communication skills, written and oral, and an ability to provide complex legal information in a comprehensible way to children, young people and those for whom English is an additional language.
  • Ability to liaise and work effectively in partnership with a wide range of partner organisations and funders.
  • Ability to work independently and on own initiative, taking responsibility for delivering and reporting on set targets.
  • Excellent IT skills and organisational skills.
  • A flexible approach including ability to attend meetings on an extended or alternative day by arrangement when necessary.
