About The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is an independent membership organisation dedicated to the education, training and advancement of surgeons, dental surgeons, doctors, and various individuals throughout healthcare who are involved in the surgical care of patients. The College has a current membership approaching 29,000 and growing, with members spanning over 100 countries around the world.
From our founding in 1505, the College has been committed to the advancement of surgery and driving patient safety standards worldwide. In our 515-year history, there has never been a better time to join the College than now.
About the Role
This is a rare opportunity to play a significant leadership role within the Faculty and to support and influence the development of sport and exercise medicine within the UK and globally. You will be expected to operate with considerable autonomy, whilst recognising and reconciling the needs of the Faculty and the requirements of its parent colleges. As such, the ability to forge and nurture effective and productive professional relationships across different organisations and at senior levels will be key.
In addition to managing the day-to-day running of the Faculty office and its staff, you will work closely and at a strategic level with Faculty office-bearers, Council members, other clinicians and senior RCSEd staff to advance the vision, mission and objectives of the Faculty. To do so effectively, you will require considerable business and financial acumen, well-developed communication skills, the ability to operate with diplomacy and tact and a significant capacity to think and act strategically, developing creative solutions in response to current and emerging priorities.
The successful applicant will join the Faculty at a critical and exciting time, as key projects such as our “Moving Medicine” initiative are gaining an international footprint and as the Faculty is considering its own future governance and legal status, with the ambition to one day become a Royal College in its own right.
Following a successful appointment, the current Head of FSEM will continue in post for several months on a job-share basis for one-day per week (total complement of 1.2 FTE) before retiring no later than December 2021. This will allow the incoming Head of FSEM to benefit from an extended period of handover and transition.
