Job Purpose:

Working as part of FEL's Schools team, the Active Travel Hub Schools Link Officer will play a key role in delivering FEL Scotland’s schools active travel programme this year. This exciting position will target support where it is most needed within each school community, helping to promote sustainable travel and community engagement.

You will act as one of the primary points of contact between FEL Active Travel School Hubs and FEL Scotland staff, establishing and nurturing relationships with key stakeholders including school administrators, teachers, community groups, and local authorities. This role requires a proactive individual with excellent communication and organisational skills to ensure that all our sessions run smoothly and efficiently.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Stakeholder Management:

• Act as one of the primary points of contact between schools and FEL Scotland staff.
• Establish and nurture relationships with key stakeholders including school administrators, teachers, community groups, and local authorities.

Consistent and Coordinated Communication & Logistics:

• Work with the Schools Coordinator to maintain clear, consistent, and coordinated communication between schools and FEL Scotland staff, including meetings and delivery.
• Address any communication gaps or issues promptly to maintain smooth operations.
• Maintain records of communication and schedules to ensure this information is up-to-date and accessible.
• Provide logistical support to the Active Travel team, streamlining processes and procedures where applicable for both schools and the Community ebike Library rental.
• Working with FEL Communications Officer, distribute newsletters, reports, and updates to keep stakeholders informed about upcoming events and progress.

Staff Support:

• Ensure all logistical aspects of events and delivery are managed efficiently (e.g., venue booking).
• Coordinate and support FEL school staff schedules to ensure all sessions have adequate staff for delivery.
• Work with FEL community officers to assist with the coordination of the Bike Buddies programme including liaising with feeder primary schools to confirm dates for delivery and pupil numbers.
• Assist with the running of the FEL Scotland Bike Library including liaising with service users, and helping with enquiries

This role will support FEL’s mission to increase everyday cycling, walking, and wheeling journeys.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Essential:

• Demonstrable experience of supporting the smooth running of a team or project with varied delivery and stakeholders.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong organisational and time management skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Passion for promoting walking, wheeling and cycling.
• Proficiency in MS Office and other relevant software.

Desirable:

• A degree or equivalent work experience in education, logistics, administration, communication, event management, or a related field.
• Experience working in or with schools.
• Knowledge of active travel and sustainability initiatives.
• Familiarity with the Forth Valley region and its educational landscape.
• Full UK driver’s license

Working Conditions:

• Flexible working hours to accommodate school schedules during the week.
• Potential travel within the region to visit schools and attend events.

We are an ambitious organisation with a great opportunity to assist Scotland with its climate change challenges. We have embarked on an important process of change, which includes adding new members to our Board, broadening our skill set so that we can provide the Trust will the leadership it needs.

As a member of our Board of charity Trustees, your focus will be to assist us strategically, applying your specific skills and experience to ensure we meet all our commitments. It would be helpful if you have previous Board experience although this is not essential. We respect that your time will be limited, and so we want to be clear about our expectations. If you can commit 1-2 days per month, this will more than meet our current requirements.

In particular, at this time, we are seeking candidates who have a background in Finance and/or Accountancy.

The Ramblers has developed a refreshed strategic plan that builds on the Ramblers' success and its mission to open the way for everyone to enjoy the simple pleasures of walking. As we look forward, we want to address the stark inequalities that still exist and support those who face the greatest barriers to getting out and going walking.

As an independent committee member of our main board, you will draw on your skills and experience to help deliver the strategy for achieving our mission, ensure that the charity’s resources are managed responsibly, and that we remain compliant with relevant laws and regulations.

There are four sub-committees with responsibility for assisting the board to discharge its duties in specific areas:

• Strategy and Delivery Committee
• Finance, Risk and Audit Committee
• People and Culture Committee
• Nominations and Governance Committee

Independent Committee Members are volunteers who are recruited to join trustees and senior staff on a specific committee and support the work of that committee, advising on matters relating to that committee’s areas of responsibility, contributing specialist knowledge as appropriate.

The role

We are seeking independent committee members who will join the People and Culture Committee and the Strategy and Delivery Committee.

To join the Committee we are seeking three individuals with proven experience and knowledge of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Volunteering or People/HR, and Digital Transformation.

The People and Culture Committee supports the board with:

• The people and culture activities including the equity, diversity and inclusion programme.
• Safeguarding, and health and safety matters.
• The overall employer offer, including setting and reviewing the remuneration of the Chief Executive.
• The Strategy and Delivery Committee supports the board with:
• Oversight of delivery of the agreed portfolio of strategic and operational programmes of work required to deliver the Ramblers’ strategy and charitable purpose.

Appointment

Appointments to sub-committees are reviewed by the nominations and governance committee, and then recommended for approval to the Board of Trustees. All committee appointments are subject to relevant eligibility checks.

Time Commitment

We know that people have other time commitments and so we want to make sure the committees work as well as possible for everyone.

Sub-committees are held up to four times per year, usually several weeks ahead of each board meeting. The meetings are held virtually and normally run from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. For each meeting you will need some time to read relevant papers.

Independent sub-committee members will be asked to sit on the committee for a period of three years, time commitments permitting.

• proven experience and knowledge in the specialism required
• a commitment to the mission, ambitions and values of the Ramblers

• an ability to bring a strategic vision and provide sound and independent judgement
