Role
This is an exciting opportunity to work within the Policy, Evidence and Influencing team to achieve change for people with breast cancer. You will play a key role leading the development and delivery of a policy and public affairs strategy in Scotland. You will represent the charity at external meetings and oversee the design and delivery of public affairs plans in line with the charity’s strategic aims and policy calls. You will also support the roll out of major campaigning activity and act as a key spokesperson for the charity in Scotland, representing us in the media as well as with campaigners and senior stakeholders.
About you
You will have experience of developing written briefings for stakeholders, analysing data to support policy development, writing public affairs plans, developing written policy material and reports, and building strong external contacts. You will have a good understanding of the current health policy landscape as well as knowledge of UK parliamentary processes and legislative systems.
You will possess excellent communication skills and have demonstrable ability to work independently and as part of a team. You will lead and manage projects and plan and organise a busy workload working outside of normal working hours on occasion and as necessary.

The role requires the post-holder to travel and attend external meetings and events in Edinburgh on a regular basis. On occasion, the postholder will also be required to travel to our London office where the majority of the Policy, Evidence and Influencing team is based. In line with our hybrid working practice, full-time staff members may choose to work up to three days per week from home. The other days will be primarily based in our Glasgow office or, where appropriate, for external meetings or events, particularly in Edinburgh. This is an excellent opportunity for a confident, pragmatic project manager with experience in environmental or civil engineering project delivery and familiarity with public sector procurement.

Thinking Space is a unique initiative funded by The Henry Smith Foundation, designed to support care-experienced young people across Scotland. Underpinned by Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) principles, Thinking Space uses mapping techniques to help young people explore their past, understand how previous experiences and relationships influence their present circumstances, and consider the potential impact on their future.
This confidential and safe environment enables participants to develop positive coping strategies and build resilience. Following your induction and initial training, you will work directly with care-experienced young people in specific locations, offering them the opportunity to reflect on how past relationships may have shaped their sense of self, decision-making, and ability to form new connections. You will also support them in exploring learned coping mechanisms and adopting healthier alternatives.
As part of The Why Not? Team, you will have access to ongoing support and professional development opportunities to enhance your practice and impact. This role will be line managed by the Why Not Trust, Operational Lead. A UK driving license is required for this role. A secondment will be explored if requested.

Common Wheel is a Glasgow-based charity dedicated to supporting people with mental health issues. Our vision is for individuals to live meaningful, satisfying lives and contribute to society. Our mission focuses on improving mental wellbeing, building skills, reducing isolation, and challenging stigma through creative, practical activities like music, art, bike building, and climbing. We have been supporting people manage or recover from mental illness for 25 years. We work in the community, in hospital wards and care homes and at our 2 purpose-built bike workshops in Maryhill and Glasgow.
Role Overview
The Charity Manager will lead the day-to-day operations of Common Wheel, ensuring the effective delivery of programmes, sound financial management, communications as well as contributing to successful fundraising. With an annual income of between £250,000 and £300,000, the charity is at a pivotal stage of growth and impact. The Manager will play a key role in shaping strategy, managing the team, and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Management
- Lead and manage a small team of 7-10 staff, a pool of freelance practitioners and a team of volunteers.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and high-performing organisational culture.
- Work closely with the Board of Trustees to develop and implement strategic plans.
Programme Delivery
- Oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of all programmes and services, such as build-your-own-bike workshops, climbing, art, music and others.
- Ensure programmes align with the charity’s mission and deliver measurable impact to participants.
- Monitor performance and report on outcomes to funders and trustees.
Fundraising & Income Generation
- Develop and implement a fundraising strategy to sustain and grow income.
