Role

Who Cares? Scotland is Scotland’s only national independent membership organisation for Care Experienced people. Our mission is to secure a lifetime of equality, respect, and love for Care Experienced people in Scotland and we currently have over 3500 Care Experienced members.

At the heart of Who Cares? Scotland’s work are the rights of Care Experienced people and the power of their voices to bring about change. We provide individual relationship based, lifelong independent advocacy and a range of connection and participation opportunities for Care Experienced people across Scotland. We work alongside Corporate Parents and others to broaden understanding and challenge the stigma experienced by Care Experienced people. We create opportunities for people with lived experience of care to influence policy makers, leaders, and elected representatives locally and nationally to shape legislation, policy and practice. We do this collaboratively to build on the aspirations of The Promise and secure positive change.

You will be joining Who Cares? Scotland at an exciting time, when the voices of those who are in or have experienced care are growing in power, individually and collectively – bringing with them insight, challenge, hope and change.

The Assistant Director of Independent Advocacy will support the Director of Advocacy and Participation to ensure the highest quality of independent advocacy nationally for Care Experienced people across Scotland. The postholder will work with regional APMs (Advocacy and Participation Managers) and national office support functions to ensure our workforce development, practice and standards are consistently applied across the country ensuring Who Cares? Scotland remains a sector leader in this field.

The post holder will be a strategic thinker and will work alongside the Influencing Team to ensure our advocacy evidence shapes our national influencing activity and that our advocacy teams are informed about policy developments. They will provide effective leadership ensuring their team is skilled and engaged and able to thrive in a culture which promotes equality and diversity; opportunities for Care Experienced people; and is trauma informed; whilst overseeing crucial work of The Promise and its commitment to independent and lifelong advocacy.

The post holder will support the Senior Management Team with organisational governance, financial control, risk management, and strategic and operational direction. Supporting and securing sustainment of funder relationships is an important and significant part of this role as you will be required to negotiate and secure funding from local and national officials, as well as local and national funders. You will be required to track and report on progress on this and support the strategic and operational oversight for financial planning, budgetary performance and the effective deployment of resources across your service areas, whilst working with a great deal of autonomy and responsibility.

The right candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and will have a proven record of managing budgets and performance targets, reporting internally and externally to other stakeholders such as local and national funding bodies. You will be resilient and work well under pressure, and you will be brilliant at forming positive relationships with people of all ages and backgrounds, whilst being committed to children’s rights, inclusive working, equal opportunities, and believe that all people can make transformative change happen in their lives if given the opportunity. Some travel, as well as some evening and weekend work, is required due to the remit of the post.

If this sounds like you and you want to help nurture an environment where the voices and views of care experienced people help support positive change, and where needs are met and opportunities are created through our participation and our lifelong advocacy work, then we would love to hear from you.

For an informal conversation about this opportunity please contact Denny Ford, Director of Advocacy and Participation, at dford@whocaresscotland.org.
