Role

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to work for a national children’s charity within an excellent and committed team.

The Senior Policy Officer will have a key role to play in contributing to the Children’s Views element of the support service for children required under the Additional Support for Learning Act. This will include championing the participation of children between the ages of 12 and 15 by providing an opportunity to express their views about decisions made on their learning and support. It will also require the postholder to help build capacity within education authorities and partners to make sure that those working with children with additional support needs are developing best practice when listening to and considering children’s views. They will proactively promote children’s rights under the Additional Support for Learning Act and contribute to the development of resources for practitioners based on learning and best practice.

We are looking who has excellent knowledge and experience of participation and engagement work with children and young people with additional support needs. They should have a good knowledge of child rights and how they interact with the policy landscape in Scotland. They will need highly developed communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with a variety of audiences and to convey complex material and ideas in an accessible manner.

They will need to be committed to the aims and values of Children in Scotland and be committed to a process of continual learning.

About Children in Scotland

Giving all children in Scotland an equal chance to flourish is at the heart of everything we do.

By bringing together a network of people working with and for children, alongside children and young people themselves, we offer a broad, balanced and independent voice. We create solutions, provide support and develop positive change across all areas affecting children in Scotland. We do this by listening, gathering evidence, and applying and sharing our learning, while always working to uphold children’s rights.

Our range of knowledge and expertise means we can provide trusted support on issues as diverse as the people we work with and the varied lives of children and families in Scotland.
