  • Full-Time 30 Hours per Week until February 2025 based at the Community flat in the rural Village of Carstairs Junction. 28 days paid Holiday per year. £26,500 -£27,600. Pro Rata, blended working hours available with minimum 25 hours office work required and some late hours and weekend hours may be required also. As a Community Development and Advocacy worker, you will be working with individuals, families, and local communities, empowering them to identify their assets, needs, opportunities, rights, and responsibilities.

You will develop activities and services to generate aspiration and confidence while supporting the community and its members on issues that affect them.

You will establish a network partnership infrastructure between communities and a range of other local authority and third sector providers such as police, social workers, courts and tribunals, schools, local housing and the department of work and pensions.

Your role will frequently involve addressing inequality and poverty and will require someone with a geographical understanding of the area resources.

The post will evolve, develop, and expand with the role suiting someone with Advocacy knowledge and an understanding of charity regulations including a board of trustee setting, who would be comfortable working under pressure and to deadlines.

You will be working with people who are vulnerable, disabled and disadvantaged.

Responsibilities

As a community development and advocacy officer, you will need to:

  • Work on projects tackling specific issues such as Poverty, social isolation, community activity and participation with groups such as homelessness, long term unemployed, families with young children, people with disabilities, mental health.
  • Seek to actively engage communities in making sense of the issues which effect their lives.
  • Set goals for improvement and respond to problems and needs through empowerment and active participation.
  • Identify community skills assets, issues, and needs.
  • Ensure that local people have their say on community matters.
  • Develop new resources in dialogue with the community and evaluate existing programs
  • Build links with other groups and agencies
  • Prepare reports and polices
  • Work with other staff members to raise and manage funds
  • Develop, recruit and train volunteers and staff
  • Develop and implement strategies
  • Mediate in matters of conflict
  • Plan, attend and coordinate meetings and events
  • Oversee the day-to-day management of the community flat and volunteers .
  • Carry out some administrative work
  • Advocate for those who need support, working with multiple agencies, regular house visits with service users and court and tribunal preparation and case building.

Qualifications

A degree level qualification in social sciences, community development and law are essential.

Background and an understanding of community development is required with experience in charity regulations and polices essential.

Knowledge of tribunals and other authority and third sector agency policies and procedures essential.

At least 2 years’ experience in community development is crucial including Volunteer management.

IT Skills with an understanding of word, excel PowerPoint.
