This is an exciting opportunity for someone seeking to develop their current skills in communications and engagement to join the multidisciplinary Communications and Engagement team working at the heart of CELCIS, the Centre for Excellence for Children’s Care and Protection.

Our team works together to use communication and engagement techniques to tell the story of what support, services, work, and investment is needed for children and young people in need of care and protection, their families, carers, and for the workforces who support them, and what it takes to change practice.

Supporting the team, you’ll work across our channels and outputs and maintain processes to help us share information, learning and knowledge that are all contributing to what we understand can improve the lives of children and young people.

As the first point of contact for our communications enquiries from colleagues and external stakeholders, you’ll require enthusiasm, and an ability to grow and maintain positive working relationships within and out with CELCIS.

While the role would suit someone with in interest in understanding the policy landscape in Scotland, and developments concerning the needs and rights of children, this role provides the opportunity to build this knowledge.

You’ll be enthusiastic, creative, and a highly organised and motivated member of our team with the ability to work across a number of tasks and projects at any one time. Attention to detail is essential in this role and the postholder will need to have the ability to understand and use design packages, and technological platforms and tools such as website Content Management Systems (CMS) systems to collate, analyse and present information and to create some content.

As with all posts in the team, the post is initially funded to March 2025, with indicative funding for a further two years.

This is an exciting new role designing and delivering digital communications to strengthen the reach and impact of the Children and Young People’s Centre for Justice (CYCJ) and offering some support to the Institute for Inspiring Children’s Futures (IICF) and aims to build on the synergies and complementarity between the two University centres. Both centres have complementary missions, yet with their own distinct partners, projects and work across Scotland and internationally. The post is based within CYCJ.

CYCJ works towards ensuring that Scotland’s approach to children and young people in conflict with the law is rights-respecting, contributing to better outcomes for our children, young people and communities. We produce robust, ground-breaking work by bringing together children and young people’s contributions, research evidence, practice wisdom and system know-how to operate as a leader for child and youth justice thinking in Scotland and beyond. An evaluation of CYCJ, published in 2020, highlights how our significant contribution stems from our unique role and positioning:

‘CYCJ is a boundary-spanning intermediary organisation. Boundary spanners are capable of contributing to system change. CYCJ is primarily funded by the Scottish Government and is based in the School of Social Work and Social Policy at the University of Strathclyde. About the Institute for Inspiring Children’s Futures (IICF)

The Institute for Inspiring Children's Futures works with partners to reveal and resolve the structural barriers to children in adversity reaching their potential. We bridge multiple perspectives to tackle big, complex challenges. We seek new solutions to long standing problems. We have an international outlook, a policy orientation, and a focus on the role of government, drawing on multiple disciplines to enable sustained impact for children.

We partner with international organisations and young people, and across the University and around the globe. Together, we engage governments to support policy responses that benefit children who face adversity. Our work focuses on Justice, Rights and Wellbeing.

We are a small team with international reach, and a range of established networks, including UN, intergovernmental, service-delivery, governmental, academic and advocacy bodies.

We actively seek to bridge research with impact, across disciplines and perspectives, convening people with differing experiences and roles to identify new solutions intergenerationally, and to apply this learning together for transformative change, with and for children.

Together - with our staff team, our Doctoral Research Centre doctoral students, a wide range of Non-Governmental Organisations and multilateral agency partners, and at times with children and young people themselves - we work to develop the evidence-base, strengthen political will, and support effective policy and practice responses for children facing adversity worldwide.

College of Social Sciences

WorkingRite seeks to stop the cycle of deprivation and poverty that occur in so many communities across Scotland. We do this through our award-winning, youth employability programme, which sees practical work skills coupled with personal development, strengthened through a mentored work placement with a small, local business of the young person’s choice.

Our flexible, person-centred programme of training, support and work placements puts the young person at the heart of their future, helping those 15 – 24 years old who are furthest from the job market, to gain real skills and a foothold on the employability ladder. We have been operating as a charity since 2011 and in that time have supported over 3,500 young people into a positive destination. We currently operate programmes in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Argyll & Bute, Aberdeen and East Ayrshire.

WorkingRite have recently secured significant investment that will see us grow our work across the country. We have also recently appointed a new CEO who has a vision to see us increase our work in the 5 local authorities we already work in and expand into new areas of Scotland where the needs of young people are greatest.

This exciting role will manage the delivery of the Rite to Work programme within secondary schools across our delivery areas. Developing the model across education authorities for growth and sustainability; the successful candidate will lead and inspire our team of Project Coordinators to deliver a comprehensive and quality programme which creates lasting impact for young school leavers.

This is a multifaceted role, that requires an ability to understand our on-ground delivery, whilst putting structures and processes in place that support the team in successfully delivering positives outcomes for the young people we support.

With significant investment recently received to grow Rite to Work, the ability to manage and engage and report on its progress internally and to key stakeholders including local authorities, education authorities and other key partners is key. The successful candidate will play a key role in driving the organisational strategy forward and developing the Rite to Work programme as a recognised progression route for secondary school pupils across Scotland.
