Role

Job Overview

Intercultural Youth Scotland (IYS) is a grassroots, youth-led organisation supporting and advocating for young Black people and young People of Colour (PoC) in Scotland. We offer specialist support to Black and PoC young people and advocate across Scottish Government for their voices to be heard. IYS' services include a youth work and creative arts service; an education program delivering anti-racism education in secondary schools; a mental health program offering free support to young Black people and People of Colour; as well as the Restless Natives employability program.

The advocacy team at IYS is dedicated to putting young BPoC at the heart of anti-racist policy influencing, ensuring their voices are heard by national decision-makers. The team supports and nurtures young people who are passionate about improving Scottish society by designing creative engagement projects which bring young people up close with senior decision-makers, including government ministers, international academics and grassroots activists.

We are looking for a confident, engaging and well-organised person who is passionate about making anti-racist change to join our team as we gear up to deliver exciting engagement opportunities with young people. The successful candidate will support the team to deliver an 11-month engagement programme in collaboration with The Scottish Government’s Anti-Racism in Education Program, contribute to the team's annual strategy and represent IYS in exciting policy spaces. They will work closely with the Head of Advocacy and Partnerships and Youth Advocacy lead to create accessible materials so that our young people can come to policy spaces well prepared and confident to speak up. They will also act as an ambassador for IYS and the BPoC young people we work with in policy-oriented networks, ensuring that anti-racist principles are highlighted in these spaces. You will also work to form relationships across IYS service teams to deeply understand the changes our young people need to see in society, translating these to high-quality planning of engagement activities alongside the Youth Advocacy Lead.

We’re looking for someone with…

  • Knowledge and understanding of race and oppressive power structures. (A knowledge of how these structures manifest in national as well as local policy spaces desirable)
  • Experience of anti-racist activism, change making, influencing or similar
  • Experience facilitating meetings or group work (preferably with young people and adults)
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to form relationships across organisations to develop our policy goals
  • Ability to develop nurturing relationships with young people interested in anti-racist policy and facilitate online and in person engagement
  • A strategic approach to policy with the ability to identify priority areas in consultation with lived experience participants
  • The ability to work collaboratively both within IYS and with partners including government officials, senior colleagues in other third sector organisations and representatives of statutory bodies
  • A well-organised and creative individual, able to organise and hold engagement activities for young people
  • The capacity to communicate complex ideas clearly and accessibly to a variety of audiences
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Lived experience of racialisation; identifying as Black or a person of colour.

We value voluntary and paid experiences gained equally! We understand that people have experiences and skills that can’t be captured in formal job experience or qualifications – no matter what your experience level, if you think you’d be a good fit for the job then please apply. We want to see what you’ve got! (Training and professional development opportunities will be provided to the successful applicant.)

We particularly encourage dark-skinned people, migrants and people who experience multiple marginalities to apply! At IYS, we believe that we must be representative of the people with whom we work. Therefore, it is vital that our staff represent many of the multiple experiences of Black people and people of colour in Scotland. The young people with whom we work need to trust that our practitioners understand their experience as well as possible.

The successful applicant must be happy to undergo a PVG check, which our HR team will support with.
