Intercultural Youth Scotland (IYS) is looking for committed board members to continue their work as Scotland’s major voice for Black and People of Colour (PoC) children and young people. Established nearly four years ago as a small anti-racist youth work organisation, we have grown to a team of over 30 staff members – many of us Black and PoC young people ourselves. We aim to make IYS a community, a support and a champion for all Black and PoC children and young people in Scotland.

We centre anti-racism and the experiences of Black and PoC young people in schools, at work and in personal lives through our Mental Health Service and our Education, Restless Natives, and Youth Work programmes. Our governmental and sectoral advocacy is an extension of these priorities and focuses on upending the entrenched inequalities and structural exclusion that have cut Black and PoC young people out of decision-making that shapes our lives. When IYS join these spaces of decision-making, we are often the only people present directly engaged and connected into the lives of Black and PoC young people. Our growing presence in Scotland emanates from this unique position – as both an advocacy organisation and a community organisation.

We are looking for a creative and proactive person with a passion for antiracist change to join our board in Scotland's leading antiracist youth charity, We centre anti-racism and the experiences of Black and PoC young people in schools, at work and in personal lives through our Mental Health Service and our Education Program, Restless Natives program, and Youth Work. We’re looking for someone with…

  4. We’re seeking enthusiastic and skilled individuals to join our Board of Trustees to help oversee our work and ensure that the voice of BPOC young people is central to everything we do. We are particularly seeking individuals with skills and experience in the following areas:

Board Member requirements:

  • Previous Board experience preferred
  • Sufficient time available for Board duties

Board Member responsibilities:

Anti-Racist Education in Schools Team Manager

Intercultural Youth Scotland (IYS) is a grassroots organisation supporting and advocating for young Black people and young people of colour (PoC) in Scotland. IYS' services include a youth work and creative arts service; the Restless Natives employability programme; a mental health programme offering free support to young Black people and PoC; as well as an Education programme delivering anti-racism education in secondary schools and supporting national policy development which the Education Manager will lead.

The Education Team at IYS are dedicated to centring the voices and experiences of young Black and PoC people in our work and anti-racist practice. This means empowering young people to make informed decisions about the best course of action in their schools and supporting them in their development of anti-racist, critical thinking, and leadership skills as part of a contemporary curriculum that reflects the 21st century. The team provides guidance and support to secondary schools from a specialist with anti-racist expertise, lived experience and an understanding of education in developing an anti-racist learning and working environment to foster an inclusive learning environment through spaces that specifically cater to marginalised members of the school community. We meet schools and staff where they are at, establishing connections and relationships with staff and students that ensure a tailored approach which addresses the complex ways racism manifests systemically within the Scottish education system.

We are looking for an experienced, effective, and supportive person to lead and manage the delivery of the current Anti-racist Education in Schools programme in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Fife, leading a small team of in-schools education leads. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing partnerships with national and local government, schools and partners, acting as an ambassador for the programme in a number of spaces; leading and supporting frontline staff who are supporting Black and PoC young people and advocating for the needs of Black and PoC young people.

The advocacy team at IYS is dedicated to putting young BPoC at the heart of anti-racist policy influencing, ensuring their voices are heard by national decision-makers. The team supports and nurtures young people who are passionate about improving Scottish society by designing creative engagement projects which bring young people up close with senior decision-makers, including government ministers, international academics and grassroots activists.

We are looking for a confident, engaging and well-organised person who is passionate about making anti-racist change to join our team as we gear up to deliver exciting engagement opportunities with young people. The successful candidate will support the team to deliver an 11-month engagement programme in collaboration with The Scottish Government’s Anti-Racism in Education Program, contribute to the team's annual strategy and represent IYS in exciting policy spaces. They will work closely with the Head of Advocacy and Partnerships and Youth Advocacy lead to create accessible materials so that our young people can come to policy spaces well prepared and confident to speak up. They will also act as an ambassador for IYS and the BPoC young people we work with in policy-oriented networks, ensuring that anti-racist principles are highlighted in these spaces. You will also work to form relationships across IYS service teams to deeply understand the changes our young people need to see in society, translating these to high-quality planning of engagement activities alongside the Youth Advocacy Lead.

We’re looking for someone with…

  • Knowledge and understanding of race and oppressive power structures. (A knowledge of how these structures manifest in national as well as local policy spaces desirable)
  • Experience of anti-racist activism, change making, influencing or similar
  • Experience facilitating meetings or group work (preferably with young people and adults)
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to form relationships across organisations to develop our policy goals
  • Ability to develop nurturing relationships with young people interested in anti-racist policy and facilitate online and in person engagement
  • A strategic approach to policy with the ability to identify priority areas in consultation with lived experience participants

Restless Natives offers holistic, specialist support to Black and PoC young people and school leavers to help them become work-ready, reach positive destinations, or move into further and higher education. Restless Natives also supports employers to ensure that they’re doing all they can to improve their workplaces for young Black people and young People of Colour.

We are looking for a supportive, engaging and well-organised person to support the young people we work with in the Central Belt – with a focus on Glasgow. The successful applicant will approach employability from an anti-racist perspective, understand the needs of the young people we support, and be able to work independently and lead relationships with employer and further education partners. The Post-School and Opportunities Lead spearheads the delivery of 1-1 support to, and developing and sharing training and work opportunities for, Black and PoC young people navigating the challenges of job-seeking, early careers and further education. They will work closely with the Restless Natives Glasgow Schools Lead in supporting young people, and with the Restless Natives Manager in developing and managing partner relationships. While the Restless Natives program in its current state has been running for three years, we are keen to take the program to new heights – we want to build a long-term, sustainable infrastructure to support Black and PoC young people in becoming work-ready and improving their lives.

• The ability to work with young people 1-to-1 in a mentor/coach capacity.

• A creative approach to mentorship and professional support, to work with people who have thus far been underserved or ignored by other methods and structures.

• An understanding of the workings of Scottish universities, higher/further education institutions, and the labour market.

• A creative approach to partnership work in order to work with prospective employers to develop opportunities that have thus far not existed for Black and PoC young people.

• The ability to work collaboratively both within IYS and with partners including schools, employers, colleges, and other further education providers.

• A motivation to help Black and PoC School Leavers reach positive destinations or become work ready and help to contribute to a more positive experience for Black and PoC young people in Scottish society.

Youth Advocacy Lead

The Youth Advocacy Lead is responsible for the development and facilitation of a group of Black and People of Colour (BPoC) young people’s participation (14-25) in a Scottish Government board responsible for oversight of the implementation of race equality in Government. The Lead will work closely with the chairs of the group to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for the young people while supporting them to take part in collective decision making.

The Lead will also steward the personal development of 5-10 young people per year, support their efforts to create change on issues they care about, and facilitate their consultation on core themes of IYS' advocacy.

The Lead will be an integral part of Advocacy & Partnerships team, ensuring effective communication between young people and IYS, oriented towards ensuring that IYS' advocacy remains ambitious and youth-led. Restless Natives School Practitioner

The Restless Natives Schools practitioner is responsible for the delivery of IYS’ employability and mentorship service in two pilot schools in Edinburgh. The practitioner will offer anti-racist and culturally proficient 1-to-1 support to BPOC school leavers to help them realise their potential and reach a positive destination after leaving school. The practitioner will be an integral part of the school’s support structure alongside careers advice, Skills Development Scotland (SDS), and Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) staff, and offer support not just to young people, but to those staff too.

The People Manager is responsible for developing and coordinating HR duties, and delivering a people strategy that enables IYS staff to thrive in their roles and help meet our vision. The IYS Mental Health Service offers free, specialist counselling for Black and PoC children and young people, aged 12-25. It was first launched as a pilot in December 2020, and has now gained the long-term funding needed to establish itself as an ambitious and fully-fledged service. Job Overview

The Gyals Group & DofE Lead is responsible for leading and delivering the IYS Gyals Group as well as our associated Duke of Edinburgh Award work, in groups inside and outside schools. They will work closely with the Youth Work Lead and Youth Work Practitioners within the youth work team to liaise with young people and organise activities for these groups. The Lead will be an integral part of the Youth Work team, collaborating and checking in with the rest of the team through weekly team meetings, providing updates on and shaping the future of the Gyals Group project, and benefitting from shared knowledge across the team.

The Participatory Research Lead is responsible for coordinating and supporting IYS projects and programmes related to youth-led and community-led consultation.
