About Shelter Scotland

A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet over a million people in Scotland struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change, with individuals, in communities, across society, and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.

At Shelter Scotland we are united by our purpose to defend the right to a safe home. Our enemy is the social injustice at the core of the escalating housing emergency. We believe that to win that fight, we must be representative of the people we are here to help and those who support our movement for change. In all our people decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, fair, equitable and transparent.

We have committed to combat racism both within and outside Shelter Scotland and welcome you on our journey to becoming a truly anti-racist organisation.

About the team

In our three Communities Teams, we identify, investigate and intervene in housing and homelessness practice issues. We are engaged in our local communities to understand the issues people are facing, and we apply expert housing knowledge, insight and analysis to identify solutions to them. As well as providing advice and advocacy for individuals, we use our insight, relationships and influence to drive systemic change. Lived experience is at the heart of everything we do.

About the role

This multi-faceted role will involve delivering and overseeing high quality housing advice and advocacy in our offices, in community settings and remotely in line with local pressing issues. Coordinating developing, delivering and evaluating case work, 2nd Tier advice and rights promotion to create change for individuals and communities will also be key. We will also rely on you to lead and contribute to strategic interventions and outcomes in line with our strategy and delivery model and establish, nurture and develop effective relationships within communities and with key external stakeholders.

You will work alongside people who are experiencing homelessness and bad housing to identify issues facing local communities and support the Community Manager with internal and external reporting against our outcomes, while also acting as a leader within the Team to help deliver Shelter’s strategy at an operational level, including holding line management responsibility for up to three people. Using evidence and insight to identify trends to recommend and implement interventions, change themes, and Shelter’s strategic aims is also a key element of this role.

About you

Already with some relevant experience of advice work, preferably with a focus on housing issues, and with the ability to progress specialist level knowledge, you will also be a natural communicator and leader, able to motivate others to great effect. You will have a proven track record of working with a range of internal and external stakeholders and have a flair for challenging practice and holding people to account as well as being able to influence decision makers. Well-versed at presenting information and arguments in a clear and compelling way and being able to listen to, engage and empower individuals and communities are both essential attributes, while proficiency using IT like Word, Excel, email, internet and in house CRM systems is also required.

Benefits

We offer a wide range of benefits, including 30 days of annual leave, enhanced family friendly policies, pension and interest free travel loans. Our employees also have access to a tenancy deposit loan, payroll giving, cycle to work scheme and an employee assistance programme.

Shelter Scotland helps over half a million people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help.
