Alcohol Focus Scotland (AFS) is Scotland’s national alcohol charity, committed to preventing and reducing harm to individuals, families, communities and Scotland as a whole.
Scotland had been making progress in reducing alcohol consumption and harm from record levels, not least due to the positive effects of minimum unit pricing of (MUP). Unfortunately, alcohol deaths have risen significantly since 2020, due to the effect of the pandemic on consumption by heavier drinkers combined with reduced access to services. Research suggests levels of harm will continue to rise for some time.

We are recruiting for a Research Officer who will work within the Foundation’s Scotland Research Team to support and lead delivery of evaluation and research projects for partner organisation See Me. This role is a full-time fixed term position until 31st March 2026, for 32 hours per week (reduced from 35 hours per week as part of our adjusted work week pilot).
See Me is Scotland's national programme to end mental health stigma and discrimination. Alongside its role as managing partner of See Me, the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) works in partnership with the programme to deliver its research, learning and evaluation functions. This includes the delivery of research, evaluation and knowledge exchange to inform programme development.
What does the role involve?
• Designing and leading evaluation and research projects across a dynamic programme of work, with the support of a wider team, using mixed method approaches (quantitative and qualitative)
• Working collaboratively with colleagues within the Foundation and with key partners, wider stakeholders and funders.
• Undertaking systematic and pragmatic literature and/or evidence reviews
• Analysing, interpreting and presenting research findings to a wide range of audiences
What skills, knowledge and experience are we looking for?
· Excellent understanding of the principles of process and impact evaluation design.

Food Train is a Scottish Charity established in 1995, supporting older people to eat well, age well and live well, through the provision of volunteer led community support services focused on food access. Since 2017, Food Train has led a national malnutrition pathfinder project called Eat Well Age Well Funded initially by National Lottery, and now via Scottish government, the project is in the final phase, focusing activities on malnutrition screening, training and implementation of a new national framework for malnutrition. Food Train holds the largest volume of data collection demonstrating risk and prevalence of malnutrition in older people in the community, in Scotland.
This role will focus on maintaining and growing awareness of the prevalence in, and risk of, food insecurity, malnutrition and loneliness among older people across Scotland. The policy officer will drive momentum and add context to relevant national legislation, policies and frameworks, bringing the voices of Food Train members to the fore, supplemented by evidence gathered over many years by the charity. The policy officer will also communicate all available, high quality and relevant impacts and evidence in the most effective way to ensure the needs of older people and their right to food is represented. The role has its focus in preventative work to support older people access good nutrition and hydration and will involve research and evaluation and policy into practice. The Policy Officer will work collectively with Food Train’s Dietitian to promote and evidence the impact of malnutrition in older people and the need for action to be taken at all levels, from individual to family, friends and carers right up to elected members and Government ministers. This role requires a collaborative, flexible and motivated person, who wants to action change to improve the lives of older people across Scotland.

The Role
To provide policy and project support for the Scottish Obesity Alliance (SOA), a Scotland wide alliance of organisations committed to tackling obesity through prevention. The Scottish Obesity Alliance has an independent chairperson and an Executive Group who set policy priorities. The post is hosted within Obesity Action Scotland who provide line management to the postholder.
The post holder will report to the Head of Obesity Action Scotland for line management support and to the Alliance Leadership/Alliance Chairperson. The Head of Obesity Action Scotland post is currently vacant, and the post holder will report to the Interim Programme Lead for the initial period. The Alliance Chairperson role is also currently vacant and will be filled once the Head of Obesity Action Scotland role is filled.
The Policy and Partnerships Officer will:

This is part of a strategic Scotland-wide network of regional Climate Action Hubs, supported by SCCAN - Scottish Communities Climate Action Network.
