Youth Vision is a charity that works with young people from South West, Edinburgh that are struggling with formal education, or are excluded from school, and are not engaged in training, or employment.

We offer a range of nature based informal education services that aim to develop confidence and self-esteem to support a healthy transition to adulthood and more positive destination.

The Development Worker will require to have experience engaging with young people who often find it very hard to articulate their own needs and who are lacking in self-confidence. Over the years we have seen how building up trusting relationships with young people makes such a positive different to their life choices. We are looking to recruit candidates who can share our passion to support the young people and whose ideal job is in the outdoors.

We run our groups during the academic term, we currently run Staying on Track on a Wednesday, a programme aimed at S4+, Friday Gardening Group (work experience) supported by volunteers and a Saturday Wilderness for 13+ years. We also offer Forest Skills in the summer holidays to younger people (aged 10+) supported by our young leaders.

We have a small team made up of a Field Manager, Senior Development Worker, Admin and Communications officer, Development Worker and 2 young project workers, supported by sessional workers/freelancers and volunteers.

You will require experience to mentor and guide young people to build confidence and resilience, while exploring what their future might look like. You will support young people and young leaders with SMART Goals and moving into positive destinations. MECOPP is Scotland’s leading Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) carers’ organisation providing a variety of care and support services to carers from BME and other marginalised communities.

The postholder will join a established Community Health Team – ‘Community Health Matters’ – to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities amongst Scotland’s Gypsy/Traveller community. The Community Health Team is part of a wider programme of work supporting the Gypsy/Traveller community which includes carer support, support for the cared for person, financial resilience, addressing food insecurity, men and women’s engagement and building digital capacity.

Our newly established community mental health and wellbeing team sits within the wider remit of the Gypsy/Traveller Community Health Team. At full complement the mental health and wellbeing team will comprise of: 1 x team leader (children & young people focus); 2.5 x family support workers (1 x adults/older people + 1.5 x children/young people). The development worker for adults and older people is already in post

Our ambition is to develop a training resource for mental health practitioners to support their understanding of and engagement with young Gypsy/Travellers experiencing poorer mental health ultimately leading to better outcomes for individuals. The training resource will be co-developed with young Gypsy/Travellers to ensure cultural relevance and appropriateness. Delivery will initially be on a pilot basis to evaluate learning effectiveness and subsequently available on a Scottish-wide basis.

We anticipate that significant travel may be required so the location of the post is flexible although some attendance at the office will be required.

Delivery of all tasks and activities will be commensurate with the number of hours secured for the post.

Our Service is a busy respite care unit for children and young people with additional support needs, including complex learning and physical disabilities. As well as providing short residential breaks the service offers outreach to families and is also involved in the managing and running of an after school club as well as a busy Easter and Summer play scheme.

Based in a quiet, residential street in Prestwick, our disability support service offers a safe, homely environment for a child to come and stay for a short break that gives their families a rest from their caring role. During that break, children enjoy a range of fun activities and experiences with our staff who specialise in taking care of children with disabilities. Our service is very much a ‘home from home’ for the children who stay with us there.

What we are looking for...

As a Young People’s Worker you will play a fundamental role in ensuring that the young people you work with have the best possible experience in working towards their objectives, in line with their care plan, supporting children to progress within their individual outcomes. Whilst not without its challenges and demands, this is a highly rewarding role, where the work we do has a demonstrable impact on each young person's progress. Using a person-centred approach, you will provide enabling support ensuring the highest level of physical, personal and emotional care. We support young people who have Epilepsy, need personal care and need gastrostomy feeding. Aberlour, in conjunction with NHS, provide all staff with training.

If you have an interest in working with young people, we would like to hear from you. We are looking for two Young People’s Workers to work part time (21 hours per week). These hours will be worked as part of a rolling rota. They will be worked evenings, mornings, weekends and public holidays. You may be expected to work the occasional night shift or sleepover.

Ideally, candidates will have social care experience, an understanding of autism, complex needs and disability. You will hold, or be willing to work towards, a relevant professional qualification at SCQF level 7 or above (for example: SVQ 3 in Care plus an HNC) together with relevant experience of working with children or young people. You must also be able to demonstrate awareness of the key elements of working with people affected by disability as well as an understanding of, and commitment to, young people’s rights.
