Who are we?

Deaf Action is a deaf-led charity, supporting and celebrating deaf people. We were established in 1835 and work with deaf people across Scotland and the South of England. Our work is geared towards empowering all deaf people to achieve their potential and fully participate in society, with equality of rights, access and opportunity.

About you

The Deaf Forum Coordinator will have strong organisation, administration and teamworking skills. They will be a good communicator and have the ability to work with a range of deaf and hearing people from different backgrounds. They will be interested in issues impacting the deaf community, and will have a passion for empowering deaf people to participate in advancing policy surrounding these issues.

The role

The Deaf Forum will be a group of deaf people with different lived experiences who can become a centralised point of contact for any organisations or bodies wishing to consult with the deaf community. The role of the Forum Coordinator will not be to sit on the forum itself, but to coordinate its members, meetings and conduct outreach on behalf of the forum.

The Forum will empower deaf people to take a leading role in addressing the issues which theyidentity as important to enhance their capacity to effectively self-manage and live well with deafness. The Forum will be designed, delivered and led by deaf people, and driven by the core principles of self-management.

The Forum will work to influence strategy and service provision, crucial to ensuring that deaf people have equality of access to the right information, services, and support so they can have ownership of their life. It will encourage individuals to be in control of their health and wellbeing by being better informed, prepared, and supported to overcome everyday challenges.

Key responsibilities of the Deaf Forum Coordinator role include:

  • Recruiting suitable Forum members
  • Identifying and engaging with stakeholders
  • Organising sessions/activities, note taking and distributing the minutes to members
