We are looking for a team member to manage our office located in Summerhall in Edinburgh. This unique role will require your expertise in running a busy workplace as well as your passion for delivering an exceptional employee experience. Excellent organisation, communication and finance skills are essential for this role. You will have the ability to build great relationships with a diverse range of staff, trustees and funders. As a small charity, the ability to jump in and support the team is important, as is the ability to problem solve.

The Office Manager will have a strong focus on finance, leading on financial transactions and managing the day-to-day relationship with our outsourced finance provider. The role will support our internal budget holders, as well as managing financial communications with our funders.

You will support the Senior Leadership Team and Trustees in the running of the organisation and manage the logistics and note taking for our Board committees. This role reports to the Head of Operations and Business Development, as part of our operations team.

We offer flexible working, the opportunity to work from home for part of the week and we are happy to discuss working patterns with candidates, either in advance or at interview. With the requirements for the role, we anticipate the successful candidate will work in the office for at least three days a week.

Fife Young Carers (FYC) are dedicated to improving the lives of young carers across Fife, offering vital support to young carers aged up to 25 years old who have taken on caring responsibilities for family members. Fife Young Carers provides person centred support options: they offer each young and young adult carer an individualised package to maintain mental and physical wellbeing, manage their caring roles and help them to reach their full potential. During 2023 they supported 1200 of Fife’s young carers.

Through extensive networks, packages of awareness raising, training sessions and culture of co-working with a wide range of children’s services, schools and local authority services, FYC play a key role in identifying and engaging with young people who previously have not been identified as young carers. The organisation has consistently worked to raise awareness of the issues faced by young carers and to advocate for their rights.

About the Role of Chair:

The current Chair for the last five years, Dave Harrold, has decided to step down. During his time on the Board, he has worked with the excellent team at Fife Young Carers and has led the charity through significant change, leaving a strong platform for the next Chair to continue Fife Young Carers' essential work supporting young carers across Fife.

Fife Young Carers is now seeking a collaborative, engaging, and inclusive Chair who shares its vision and mission. The ideal candidate will possess the skills, passion, and commitment needed to drive the organisation forward.

The Chair will play a key role in shaping the strategic direction and impact of Fife Young Carers. Working with the Board of Trustees and the Chief Executive Officer, the Chair will help deliver the organisation’s ambitious mission to support young carers across the region. This role requires leadership that harnesses the combined talents of the leadership teams and enhances the charity’s ability to influence the wider agenda for young carers.

To be considered for this role, you should have experience operating at a senior strategic leadership level, with a successful track record of achievement. A good understanding of charity governance and experience working with or as part of a Board of Trustees is essential.

Your interpersonal and communication skills must be exceptional, enabling you to act as an effective ambassador for the charity in various environments. Strategic thinking is key, along with the ability to contribute to long-term planning and vision. An entrepreneurial mindset, balanced with sound judgement and a healthy understanding of risk, will be critical in guiding the charity's growth and impact. A solution-focused approach, combined with the ability to see the bigger picture while remaining pragmatic, will be essential to success in this role.

What to Expect as a Trustee:

Board Meetings: Our Board meets once per month in the evening, with the option of joining us virtually via a hybrid format and an expectation to attend two in-person meetings per year. We do not hold meetings during the summer months of May through August.

Communication Commitments: Alongside Board meetings, trustees will be expected to engage in occasional document reviews and correspondence, ensuring effective communication and preparation for upcoming meetings and ESCA activities.

Event Participation: Depending on your availability and interests, you may choose to participate in ESCA events, engaging with the community and supporting our initiatives.

About BEFS

Built Environment Forum Scotland (BEFS) is the strategic intermediary body for Scotland’s built environment sector, bringing together civic, voluntary, and professional organisations that operate at the national level. As an umbrella organisation, BEFS informs, debates and advocates on strategic issues and policies affecting the built environment. Our aim is to communicate the importance of Scotland’s built and historic environment to policy makers at all levels of government, private owners and investors, and amongst professionals and voluntary organisations. BEFS are funded via Historic Environment Scotland, and the BEFS – Fit for the Future project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (until 31 March 2025).

BEFS overall vision is for a strong built environment sector in Scotland. One that is informed, that can debate issues in a constructive way, that can demonstrate its impact, that can advocate for good outcomes on the ground.

We are currently seeking individuals to join our Board of Trustees, to help us take the organisation forward and provide support to practitioners in addressing, together, the key issues, challenges and opportunities facing Scotland’s built environment.

Our Trustees

The role of our Board of Trustees is to support our work and ensure strategic oversight of our advocacy, events and other activities. Whilst you don’t need to have previous board level experience, participation in other types of collective / voluntary group work and working as a team would be beneficial; and you do need to have a passion for the built environment. BEFS can support and provide training if you are new to being a board member.

As a BEFS Trustee, you will have the opportunity to make an impact on Scotland’s historic and existing built environment, bringing your professional expertise to bear on shaping the organisation as we enter a new phase of development.

Trustees are appointed for a period of three years, which can be extended for up to two additional periods. Trustees are required to attend four Board meetings a year, plus the AGM in December; meetings will be a mix of online and in-person (Edinburgh).

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with experience of the following:

• Communications, digital and marketing;

• Public Affairs;
• Sustainability & Net Zero
