Role

Help Shape the Future of Mountain Rescue in Scotland

Every day, across Scotland, dedicated mountain rescue volunteers stand ready to respond when people need them most. At Scottish Mountain Rescue (SMR), our role is to support, strengthen and represent the 26 volunteer teams that provide this vital, lifesaving service.

We are entering an exciting new chapter, with ambitious plans to strengthen our organisation, build new partnerships and secure a sustainable future for mountain rescue in Scotland.

We are looking for an experienced, creative and ambitious Head of Development to help us turn those ambitions into reality.

The Opportunity

Reporting directly to the CEO, you will play a key leadership role in shaping and delivering SMR's fundraising strategy.

This is an opportunity to bring fresh thinking, develop meaningful partnerships and grow philanthropic support for an organisation that makes a genuine difference.

You will:

  • Lead the development and delivery of our fundraising strategy, identifying opportunities for growth and income diversification.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with major donors, charitable trusts, foundations and corporate partners.
  • Develop fundraising programmes, including major gifts, grants, corporate partnerships and legacy giving.
  • Work collaboratively with member teams to ensure national fundraising complements local efforts.
  • Strengthen donor stewardship, fundraising systems and reporting.
  • Lead and support our Fund Development Coordinator.
  • Contribute to SMR's wider organisational strategy and long-term sustainability.

About You

We are looking for someone with:

  • A proven track record of successful fundraising and income generation.
  • Experience securing significant donations, grants or corporate partnerships.
  • Excellent relationship-building and communication skills.
  • The ability to think strategically while delivering practical results.
  • Strong organisational skills and a collaborative approach to leadership.
  • Enthusiasm, creativity and a genuine commitment to our mission.

We value experience and achievement over formal qualifications. A background in mountain rescue is not essential.

Why Join Us?

This is an exciting opportunity to join SMR at a pivotal moment in our development.

Working alongside our CEO and a committed team, you will have the opportunity to shape our fundraising ambitions, build something meaningful and make a lasting contribution to mountain rescue in Scotland.

What We Offer

  • 28 days (FTE) annual leave
  • 10 days (FTE) public holidays
  • Access to our pension scheme.
  • Remote working from home

We offer the opportunity to work with inspiring volunteers and the satisfaction of knowing your work helps support lifesaving services across the country.
