Borders Independent Advocacy Service (BIAS) has established itself as one of Scotland’s leading providers of independent advocacy, delivering exceptional services since 1995. At the heart of our work are the rights of advocacy partners and the power of their voices to bring about positive change.

We provide individual, issue-based independent advocacy for people across the Scottish Borders. We work alongside corporate parents and communities to broaden understanding, and with policymakers, leaders and elected representatives locally and nationally to shape law, policy and practice based on the lived experience of advocacy partners in Scottish Borders.

About the Role

BIAS is seeking passionate, values-driven individuals to join our Board of Trustees and help shape the future of our organisation. If you have experience in finance, HR, law, or advocacy, and a passion for supporting others, we would love to hear from you. We are looking to strengthen our Board to help guide the charity forward.

What does the role involve?

Board Members support the strategic direction, governance, and sustainability of Borders Independent Advocacy Service. Responsibilities include:

• Attending quarterly Board meetings (held both online and in person).
• Attending occasional additional meetings, particularly during key development periods.
• Meetings usually lasting less than 2 hours
• Reviewing Board papers in advance, which are circulated by email (hard copies available on request)
• Supporting good governance and effective decision-making.
• Acting as an ambassador for BIAS.
• Contributing skills, expertise, and insight.
• Supporting the organisation to achieve its strategic objectives.

As a Trustee, you will help guide and support this important work, contributing to the strategic leadership and governance of an organisation that makes a real difference to people's lives every day. As we embark on an exciting new strategic phase, we are looking for people who are passionate about our cause and we welcome applications from both experienced Trustees and individuals new to Board roles who can demonstrate the judgement, confidence and strategic perspective required of charity Trustees.

We welcome applications from people with lived experience of being affected by crime, and we are also looking to increase the diversity of Board members. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds, cultures, and communities to apply for Trustee positions, as we believe that a diverse board enhances our ability to provide effective support to victims, representative of our communities.

We are particularly interested in applicants who bring strength in one or more of the following areas:

• Strategic development and organisational transformation – including shaping, delivering or governing strategy in complex or changing environments.

• Organisational sustainability – including income diversification, partnership working, or long term financial viability.

• Criminal justice system experience – policy, practice or leadership experience within justice, statutory or related public services impacting victims and witnesses.

• Charity governance and board leadership – experience as a trustee, non executive, committee chair or senior leader with a strong understanding of good governance.

By joining the Board at this point, Trustees will help shape Victim Support Scotland’s next chapter and contribute to strong, sustainable governance that supports victims and witnesses across Scotland for years to come.

Capability Scotland works with people with complex and diverse needs, delivering exemplary care, support and education to meet the individual needs of the people we support.

Would you like to contribute to the work of Capability Scotland? We are looking to appoint new Trustees to complement the skills of our existing Board, to drive change and help us shape our strategic direction, giving clarity to our purpose, aims and objectives.

We are looking for a diverse range of people who may have an interest in helping us prepare for future challenges and demands. We would particularly welcome applications from candidates with expertise in Health & Social Care/Social Work, fundraising/marketing/communications, education and technology, as we explore the use of assistive technology and AI in the delivery of person centred care. We would also love to see applications from people with lived experience of disability.

Our Board’s responsibility is to ensure the highest standards of governance and provide oversight, scrutiny and support of the management of the organisation.

This is an exciting time to join the organisation. We are entering a period of ambitious growth and transformation, with plans underway to redevelop our largest residential service in Perth. Our Inclusive Community Project will enable us to continue delivering exemplary care, while creating a modern environment shaped by innovation and best practice. Capability Scotland is proud to operate Corseford College, the first and only college in Scotland dedicated specifically to young adults with multiple and complex disabilities. The achievements of our students are a powerful testament to the success of this pioneering model. As we look ahead, our Board will play a crucial role in supporting the college’s continued growth and development, ensuring that many more young people can benefit from this life changing opportunity.

The people we support are at the heart of everything we do and there may be the opportunity to become more involved across the many aspects of the organisation, helping to empower our people to have a voice, realise their ambitions and achieve their full potential. We continue to develop innovative, high quality solutions to address gaps in care and support provision.

This is a non-remunerated position, however, travel and subsistence expenses are available in accordance with our Expenses Policy.

We are looking for a motivated and collaborative Chair to proactively lead and support our organisation, providing strategic direction and insight to ensure we achieve our vision.

Wellbeing Scotland has been dedicated to supporting people impacted by child abuse since 1994. We support children, young people, adults and families, with an established specialism in access to records for people who experienced abuse while in care. We are a long-standing delivery partner of the Scottish Redress Support scheme.

We recently said goodbye to some long-standing Board members and are now looking for a new Chair and more trustees to bring fresh perspectives and energy. This is an opportunity to broaden our skillset and ensure the organisation is well supported for its next chapter.

The Chair’s role will be crucial throughout our next phase: providing steady leadership, supporting the Board through change, and ensuring the ongoing resilience of the organisation.

Key responsibilities of the Chair:

• Provide effective leadership and strategic direction
• Chair Board meetings and AGM
• Act as a bridge between the Board and the senior leadership team
• Ensure the charity operates in line with governing documents, charity law and best practice
• Represent Wellbeing Scotland externally with funders, partners and supporters

This is a voluntary role requiring attendance at 6 Board meetings per year plus additional support in line with the responsibilities of the role.

Previous experience as a Chair is desirable but not essential. Most important is your commitment to our work and to using your experience to help us achieve our vision. We actively welcome expressions of interest from people of all backgrounds, professions and life experiences.
