Men’s Wellbeing Support Worker

Role

Ideal working pattern: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, 10:00am – 4:00pm and Friday 9am – 4pm. We understand that many will have other commitments outside of work and so flexible working, part-time hours or job-sharing arrangements will be considered for the right candidate.

Please note; As this post will involve work in a men’s only service, there is a genuine occupational requirement to ensure that we recruit male Wellbeing Support Workers and therefore these posts are only open to men (exempt under Schedule 9, Part 1 of the Equality Act 2010).

About Us:

Glasgow Council on Alcohol (GCA) is an independent Scottish charity that works to reduce alcohol and drug-related harm at both individual and community levels. Established in 1965, GCA adopts a long-term, trauma-informed and asset-based approach to changing the culture around substance use. Its services are built on a person-centred, harm-reduction model, supporting people whether their goal is to reduce consumption or achieve abstinence.

GCA offers free, confidential counselling services for people concerned about their own or someone else's drinking. GCA delivers a range of interventions including groupwork and employability support as well as a number of holistic and inclusive services, such as a women’s service for survivors of gender-based violence, young persons peer education service, LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing support and tailored wellbeing programmes.

GCA is also a recognised provider of professional development, offering a comprehensive training portfolio including education aimed at increasing awareness of alcohol use and promoting healthier lifestyles, COSCA Counselling Skills and a Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy.

GCA deliver services over 6 days per week and throughout Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire, helping people make meaningful, positive change in their lives.

About the Role:

The role of Men’s Wellbeing Support Worker is based within GCA’s Men’s Health and Wellbeing service. The role involves providing one-to-one health and wellbeing support to men who have experienced both trauma and addiction. Facilitating groups will also be a key part of this role. The aim of this role is to help individuals to achieve positive health and wellbeing outcomes.

The Men’s Wellbeing Support Worker will report to the Service Manager – Wellbeing.

This post requires a Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme membership - successful applicants will be required to join the PVG Scheme.

Key Responsibilities of the Men’s Wellbeing Support Worker:

  • Achieving targets in relation to supporting individuals to progress in key areas of health and wellbeing
  • Delivering one-to-one support in a person-centred manner, both out in the community and at GCA’s head office
  • Facilitating groups, both informal activity based groups and formal structured groups
  • Providing psychoeducation
  • Networking with partners
  • Documenting appointments and tracking progress on the Views database
  • Undertaking any other duties as required by the Service Manger - Wellbeing

Qualifications and Experience :

  • Clean current UK Driving License and access to own car is desirable but ability to travel citywide via public transport is sufficient
  • A qualification in Health and Social Care or equivalent qualification is desirable but candidates who clearly meet the criteria for the role but do not have this qualification will also be considered
  • Proven experience of working in mental health or voluntary sector, experience working with males specifically is desired
  • Proven experience of interacting with individuals in a recovery from drugs and/or alcohol and trauma
  • Proven ability to manage and support a caseload of clients to achieve goals
  • Understanding of trauma informed practise
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of the issues faced by those in recovery
  • Proven experience of delivering group sessions
  • Experience of using digital technology effectively essential with knowledge of I.T/ Computer Skills, Microsoft Office, and Zoom/Teams
