We are recruiting a Trustee - Treasurer (Volunteer) to the Board of Hebridean Pursuits Outdoor Learning (HPOL)

Who we are

HPOL is an Oban based charity that provides real outdoor adventures for young people to help them grow and achieve more than they thought possible whatever their background. Established in 1991 (Roses Charitable Trust) we have a long and successful history of working with young people. HPOL is a registered SCIO - SC049755.

What do we do

We deliver residential courses, primarily in the West Coast of Scotland, for groups of young people from across the UK. We also deliver day and multi-day adventures for groups of young people primarily from our community in Argyll. We also provide Coasteering certification and technical training and guiding on a bespoke basis.

We have one full time Course Director that leads in all aspects of the design and delivery of our outdoor activities. In addition, we have a part-time (3/5s) Finance & Administration Lead that has overall responsibility for the operations supporting the delivery of our courses and the charity.

Our Board

We currently have 8 trustees which include a chair and a treasurer. Our trustees come from a variety of professional backgrounds and are based across the UK.

Our current treasurer has been a trustee and treasurer for 14 years and plans to retire from his post in September 2025 at our AGM.

Our organisation is small, and so our trustees are involved in the management of the charity bringing their expertise to bear as required.

Our Board meets 4 times a year - mostly in Oban.

The Role

We are seeking to appoint a new trustee treasurer - someone with financial management skills, a passion for the outdoors, and shared determination to improve the lives of young people regardless of their background. The role is on a volunteer basis with an expected time commitment of 1 to 2 days per month.

Community Volunteers Enabling You (COVEY) has operated across Lanarkshire for 32 years supporting 5,000 children, young people and parents/carers to become more resilient, safe and better equipped to reach their full potential. COVEY provides 1-1 and group-based befriending, mentoring and family support.

COVEY is seeking a passionate, professional and proactive individual to provide support to families who are experiencing difficulties or challenges in their everyday lives such as isolation, mental and physical health problems, disability, poverty and trauma. This involves direct work with children, young people, parents/carers and whole families via support and group-based mentoring.

The successful candidate will provide person centred, relationship-based support to children, young people and parents/carers to help them identify and address short-term needs (strengthening confidence, wellbeing and family/community relationships) and support long-term aspirations into positive destinations. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with experienced professionals, manage complex cases, and support volunteer mentors. We are looking for a Facilitator who will run our Rural Group on Wednesday evenings. The group runs from 6pm- 8pm with young people pickups beforehand and drop offs after.

About the Communities Team

The Communities Team engage with individuals directly within communities across Aberdeen to help reduce the impact of poverty. We do this by providing advice, information, and support and tailored courses to enable people to secure access to education, training, accommodation, health, and other services appropriate to their needs. We utilise a variety of resources to help individuals build confidence and routine, and we also involve the community in the design and delivery of the project, through regular Community Voice sessions. Our work helps to signpost and guide individuals to participate in further training or internal/external employability programmes which increase their employment opportunities.

About the Role

As a Development Coach, you will be working with communities, building trusted relationships with local stakeholders to increase awareness of community assets including individuals, resources, and places. The role involves assessing client requirements to determine the necessary support, education and development opportunities and developing personal action plans with clients. These action plans will focus on the client’s life and employability aspirations, and will aid the client’s progression, achievement, and goals. You will ensure that ‘quality’ time is made available to each client through one-to-one sessions and group work to continuously monitor and review their progress towards identified goals, ensuring they remain relevant, realistic, and achievable.

The role involves providing information, advice, and support to clients to enable access to employment, training, and education opportunities, such as accredited learning through City and Guilds. The aim is to maximise opportunities for the client to empower the local communities and to demonstrate the positive impact of the project.

About the Employability Team

Our employability Team provides learning, education, training and employability support to assist individuals into Education, Training and Employment. Our employability programmes are tailored to an individual’s needs, barriers and goals to ensure a personalised approach to everyone, every time. We engage organisations and businesses, large and small, to help provide work placements which contribute to increased confidence and equips individuals with valuable transferable skills for the workplace.

Working with partners, we offer a ‘pipeline’ of both informal and accredited learning and training opportunities. The aim is to support individuals who may be at different points of moving towards work in Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. We work with individuals to improve Health & Wellbeing build Core Skills, Confidence, Training and Employability skills whilst also supporting additional needs/barriers to ensure they are best placed to ultimately enter the area of employment that they are seeking.

Using a person-centered approach, you will undertake strength-based employability assessments with individuals to identify the necessary support and development opportunities each client requires. This is to ensure individuals are supported in working towards accredited learning, training and employment. You will work with individuals to build on their strengths and enable them to progress towards employment. You will work collaboratively with a variety of key stakeholders including both internal and external services and agencies to support individuals towards positive outcomes.

The successful individual will understand the skills required to successfully motivate individuals to engage with education, training and employment. You will understand the benefits of wellbeing, and how this impacts the journey towards achieving these. You will have knowledge of the current employment market, local education, training, and employment opportunities available for individuals. You will be able to work collaboratively with other key stakeholders in Aberdeenshire to proactively promote and deliver our employability and learning service. You will be solutions focused and most of all, you will be passionate about believing in individuals, seeing their potential and investing in them to achieve their goals.
