Role

Fairmilehead Parish Church is seeking a dedicated and reliable Church Caretaker to ensure the cleanliness, maintenance, and overall smooth operation of our church centre. The ideal candidate will possess strong organisational skills, a proactive attitude, and a commitment to supporting the church’s mission by maintaining a welcoming and safe environment for all members and visitors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Welcoming hall users and setting up halls when required.
  • Church Centre Maintenance: Perform occasional maintenance tasks, including minor repairs of painting and clearing of storage facilities, ensuring all church facilities and equipment are in good working order.
  • Cleaning: Maintain daily the cleanliness of all church areas, including the sanctuary, offices, toilets, kitchen, and common areas. Duties include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and recycling.
  • Groundskeeping: Maintain a small area of the church grounds within the church centre - removal of weeds and raking leaves. In winter, maintenance involves snow removal and gritting of pathways. Ensure walkways and parking areas are safe and clear of debris year round.
  • Funeral/ Wedding Event Setup and Support: Assist with the setup, and clearing for church services, events, and special activities.
  • Security: Open and close the church buildings for services and events. Monitor and ensure the security of the premises, including locking doors and windows.
  • Inventory and Supplies: Liaise with church office the cleaning and maintenance supplies.
  • Outside Contractors: Liaise with workmen/women as and when required.
  • Coordination: Work closely with church members/ volunteers offering help to regular and occasional visitors.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in a maintenance or custodial role, preferably in a church or similar setting.
  • Basic knowledge of general repair skills.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment and tools.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy objects and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Desirable: ability to work occasional additional hours.

Working Conditions:

  • The position requires physical activity, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Work is indoors but involves outdoors work in winter for path clearing,and occasional weeding in summer.
  • The Church caretaker must be able to respond to emergency maintenance issues liaising with the church Property Team.
  • The Church caretaker is entitled to six weeks annual leave. Approximately two of these are taken over the Christmas and festive period and two at the beginning of July each year when our centre closes. The church centre is also closed on Easter Monday. Working Days Monday - Thursday

Monday 4:45 pm-9:15pm

Tuesday 2:45pm -10pm

Wednesday 2:45pm-8:15pm

Thursday 1:45pm - 9:00pm

Job Share will be considered.

Reports To: Line Manager, Personnel Committee at Fairmilehead Parish Church.
