Move On is an established and successful Edinburgh and Glasgow-based charity supporting people to achieve personal goals and make positive lasting change in their lives. We are seeking to appoint a Development Worker with proven skills and experience in one of our social enterprises based in Edinburgh, Move On Wood Recycling.
Move On Wood Recycling (MOWR) is a social enterprise dedicated to creating positive environmental and social impact. We operate circular services across multiple sectors in Edinburgh and The Lothians; waste wood collections, reclaimed timber sales, upcycled, bespoke furniture and employability training and volunteering opportunities for local and young people in our workshop.
Main job responsibilities:
As a sessional Development Worker, you will be an essential part of the Move On Wood Recycling team alongside staff, volunteers, and young trainees:
- Ensuring that the enterprise operates to a high standard and in a manner that is consistent with the values and purpose of Move On.
- Working closely with the MOWR Operational Manager and other colleagues.
- Attending team meetings and wider Move On meetings, where required.
Your duties will vary and will support MOWR operations day-to-day:
Woodworking/carpentry
- Skills and experience of building wooden furniture products
- Competent with hand tools and machinery
- Responding efficiently and creatively to customers bespoke furniture ideas
- Ensuring furniture orders are built and completed in a timely manner
- Working closely alongside fellow Development Workers in our workshop.
- Processing used wood ready for resale
- Ensuring that health and safety standards are established, implemented and maintained.
Waste wood collections
- Support collections schedule driving our 3.5 tonne caged pick-up truck to numerous locations across Edinburgh and The Lothians to construction sites, businesses & homes.
- Communicating with site managers and customers.
- Handling/loading timber on and off vans.
Customer service
- Serving and communicating effectively with customers in our timber shop.
- Processing orders at sales desk
- Answering call and email queries regarding products, orders and bespoke furniture projects
- processing used wood ready for re-sale, delivering timber, making furniture and working in the shop.
- Deliver customer furniture orders.
Supervision
- To co-ordinate supervision of volunteers and young people in the wood workshop.
- Ensuring all payments relating to training allowances and lunch expenses are recorded accurately and within timescales.
- Operating a trauma informed approach to young people and volunteers working alongside you in the workshop. We have a number of staff who are working at a trauma-informed and trauma-skilled level to train fellow staff.

Person Specification and Profile
SKILLS QUALITIES and EXPERIENCE
Essential:
- PVG check
- Woodworking/carpentry skills and experience of wood products or similar
- Competent with hand tools
- Excellent communication skills
- Hands-on approach
- High level of motivation and enthusiasm
- An entrepreneurial attitude
- Positive and caring attitude
- In good health and physically fit
- IT skills
- A full, clean UK driving licence
- Experience of recruiting, training and co-ordinating volunteers, especially disadvantaged groups
Desirable:
- Some experience of the construction and/or recycling industries
- Familiarity with the third sector
- Experience ofdelivering accredited training
- Experience working with vulnerable and young people
- Health and safety award
- An interest and/or knowledge of environmental and social issues

Context
Rock Trust delivers the Upstream prevention project in schools and the post holder will work with the Upstream Team, pilot schools and education departments to create a toolkit for the implementation of Upstream. This will involve working with current pilot schools to document the changes required in school systems, the challenges and how to overcome them and an assessment of the resources required to deliver Upstream. The Ask & Act Education Manager will use this learning to create a toolkit and implementation plan to be used for national implementation.
This role is responsible for:
- Coordinating work with multiple local authority Education departments, senior leaders and cross-sector partners (Housing, Social Work, Health, third sector)
- Designing and documenting processes, guidance and training materials that enable schools to embed early identification of housing risk
- Capturing learning, gathering data and producing a national implementation framework
- Ensuring all activity aligns with statutory duties, local contexts and Rock Trust’s prevention approach
The Ask & Act Education Manager will need to be methodical, have strong report writing skills and interpersonal skills to co-ordinate the information gathering and documenting. They will be responsible for delivering the toolkit to a high standard, making a lasting contribution to Scotland’s homelessness prevention system.
