Chair of the Board of Trustees

We are excited to have the opportunity to recruit a committed, experienced Chair with outstanding strategic planning ability, to lead our charity as we enter the next stage of our evolution and prior to the launch of our new strategy in April 2025.

As Chair of MCR Pathways, you will play a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction of the charity, ensuring the highest standards of charity governance and effective oversight of our operations. Drawing on your substantial non-executive experience, ideally as Chair, you will ensure a cohesive and well-functioning board where diverse views are encouraged to improve consensus decision-making.

You will work closely with board colleagues through quarterly board meetings, and working groups and provide support and constructive challenge to the Chief Executive, Sharon McIntyre and her senior team. With a track record of identifying and mitigating risk, you will protect and promote the charity’s excellent reputation, and represent us at external events and with key stakeholders.

Our Commitment

These positions are a voluntary role in a national third sector organisation that has important stature in Scotland with a growing reach in England.

Hamilton Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) was formed over 50 years ago to provide a holistic advice service to the residents of Hamilton. As a member of the Scottish Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux network, Hamilton CAB aims to provide free, independent, impartial, and confidential advice and information to ensure that people understand their rights and responsibilities and can express their needs effectively. We campaign and influence to tackle the root cause of the problems people face and work to strengthen their rights.

Hamilton CAB currently operates from two offices in Hamilton and are supported by 18 members of staff and 31 volunteers including board members. The Bureau supports individuals with a wide range of general enquiries whilst project staff provide specialist support on topics including benefits, debt, utilities, and money matters.

The role:

We are seeking a committed and dynamic individual to serve as the Chair of our organisation.

As Chair, you will play a vital role by providing strategic leadership to the board, ensuring it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation. You will also provide line management, support and direction to the Chief Officer, helping them to achieve the organisation’s aims and objectives; and ensures the smooth running of Hamilton CAB.

We are looking for an individual who has experience of leadership and governance. You will have a passion for the voluntary sector, strong leadership skills and an ability to drive forward positive change.

Although, not financially remunerated, the role is high profile and respected within the community and will offer a great challenge, learning and networking opportunity for the right person.

There are an average of 6 Board meetings per year to commit to as well as preparation time and regular collaboration /communications with the team and stakeholders.

As a few of our Trustees, including our Chair, are reaching the end of their extended terms, Cumbernauld Action for Care of the Elderly (CACE) is seeking passionate individuals to join our dedicated team of Trustees. We are also looking to fill the position of Chair to help lead our mission of promoting and supporting the needs of older adults in Cumbernauld and the surrounding Northern Corridor.

As a Trustee, including the role of Chair, you’ll have the opportunity to leverage your skills and expertise to support the well-being and independence of older adults. You'll collaborate closely with fellow Trustees, staff, volunteers, and the wider community, building strong relationships while gaining valuable experience in governance, financial management, and strategic planning. By engaging with stakeholders and partners, you’ll broaden your network, help promote our services within the community, and develop transferable skills—such as leadership, decision-making, and project management—that can enhance your career prospects.

Key Responsibilities of a Trustee, including the Chair:

• Collaborate with fellow Trustees to provide strategic leadership and governance for CACE.
• Lead and facilitate the Board (for the Chair) to ensure it fulfils its governance responsibilities.
• Ensure our charity operates in alignment with its mission, values, and legal obligations.
• Review and approve budgets, financial reports, and funding applications to maximize our impact.
• Support the management team in delivering high-quality care and services to older adults.
• Participate in fundraising and community engagement activities to advance and promote our cause.
• We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and skill sets. Induction and training opportunities will be provided for Trustees.

We are seeking experienced Board Directors to join our Edinburgh Science Ltd Board. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in both the private and not-for-profit sectors, with enthusiasm for Public Engagement in Science. A science-related background is highly desirable. In addition, we are looking for individuals who can contribute expertise in areas such as Fundraising, Finance, IT, Marketing.

We are a not-for-profit enterprise that delivers activities in the UK and abroad including Edinburgh Science Festival, the learning programmes Generation Science, Careers Hive and a variety of climate /sustainability events and activities.

Our mission is to inspire, encourage and challenge people of all ages and backgrounds to explore, understand and engage with the world around them and to communicate the educational, social and economic benefits of science and technology. As leaders in our field of Science Communication, we work year-round to create and deliver dynamic hands-on workshops and exhibitions and inspirational shows, discussions, debates and performances that continually push the boundaries of public engagement with science. Communication and engagement is at the core of all our work and we strive to ensure that this is embedded in all aspects of our organisation.

We aim to have a Board which covers the key areas in which we work, and we are now seeking to appoint additional members. We are also looking to diversify the Board. We encourage applications from the whole breadth of our ethnically and culturally diverse communities, and from people at all stages in their careers.

Priority will be focussed on potential new members who have experience and skills in:

· Income generation and Stakeholder engagement

Our non-executive board have ultimate responsibility for the operation and development of the organisation, including employability, compliance with legislation, fundraising, public relations and financial control.

There are four full board meetings and an AGM of Edinburgh Science Ltd you would be expected to attend. Other sub-committees may meet on an ad hoc basis.

About you:

· Proven executive experience, ideally in an environment where managing change has been required.

· A strong background in strategy in the private or not for profit sector.

· An interest in the work of Edinburgh Science.

· An excellent ability to work in collaboration with other stakeholders.

· Experience of formation, implementation and achievement of a business vision and strategy.

· IT literacy.
