Role

Working for a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP)

You will be a key member of a small team involved in a range of duties including casework and engagement focused activities as well as supporting and contributing to the work of Alex Rowley MSP in serving his constituents within the Mid Scotland & Fife region.

Alongside casework and engagement, a core requirement will be to drive Alex to events and visits around the large Region that he represents, stretching from Crianlarich to Crail, Aberdour to Aberfeldy. You will take part in those events, supporting Alex.

A current, clean, driving licence is therefore essential and candidates unable to drive cannot be considered for this role. The successful candidate will be subject to a DVLA driving licence check prior to an unconditional offer being made. Possession of an suitable vehicle is not a requirement as arrangements will be put in place depending on the successful candidate’s circumstances: it’s more important that you are comfortable and confident in carrying out the activity.

Further to these requirements, the successful candidate would also be expected to support policy and research work as required by the office of Alex Rowley MSP.

Please note, some evening and weekend work will be required to support Alex with events taking place outside of normal working hours.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting with keeping casework up to date and responding to public enquiries.
    • Keeping cases up to date by tracking, logging and recognising when to escalate issues within team.
    • Meeting constituents on a wide range of issues, including those of a sensitive nature and escalating accordingly.
    • Advocating on constituent's behalf with relevant bodies to resolve matters.
  • Reviewing constituent records and documentation in line with casework GDPR requirements.
    • Ensuring casework filing systems, both electronic and manual, are kept up-to-date in line with GDPR requirements.
  • Attending surgeries where necessary, supporting the production of reports and monitoring media trends on my behalf
    • Conducting basic research and surveys.
    • Investigating patterns of enquiries and producing reports.
    • Monitoring local and regional media and generating media coverage.
    • Briefing me and drafting responses
  • Community engagement
    • Organise and coordinate events on behalf of Alex
    • Stakeholder communication: Identifying key stakeholders and constituents.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders and constituents
  • Accompany Alex on visits & surgeries and add value to community interactions
    • Transport Alex to visits & surgeries in a comfortable, safe and timely manner.
    • Involvement in publicity efforts to enhance community involvement and represent their interests
    • Keep record of mileage & fuel related usage
  • Support the office where required with policy and research requirements
    • Researching and interpreting information.
    • Searching and extracting evidence from published reports, presenting data in different formats.
    • Providing advice and recommendations on policy matters
    • Proactively engaging with internal and external expertise as appropriate
    • Presenting sometimes complex issues clearly and persuasively with excellent written and verbal communication.

About You

Requirements

  • Have excellent organisational skills while being flexible in prioritising workloads during busy times.
  • Have excellent communications skills, with accurate attention to detail and the ability to work effectively with colleagues.
  • Be patient and sensitive while remaining objective and open minded.
  • Be comfortable being in a front facing role explaining regulations such as GDPR to the general public.
  • Be acutely aware of the responsibility of representing those unable to do so themselves in certain situations.
  • Have a natural interest in helping people with a curiosity to probe for further information where required.
  • Have excellent IT skills including proficiency using Office 365, sending emails, data entry and conducting online research.
  • Previous experience of using Caseworker software is desirable but not essential
  • A full UK driving licence is essential. Please note, it is not essential to own a car as a vehicle can be arranged by Alex.
  • Confident driving around the Mid Scotland & Fife region.
