Role

About the role

A new and exciting opportunity to work with us is here at Sustrans as our Access to Bikes Project Officer, providing free bikes to underprivileged children.

As the Access to Bikes Officer for West Lothian, you will support two selected high schools within Livingston (West Calder High School & St Margaret’s Academy) enabling pupils to walk, cycle, scoot and wheel more regularly by providing access to equipment. The project provides fleet bikes to these schools, bike libraries for individual loans and pathways to owning a bike.

You will work with the schools, to develop and maintain fleets of bikes, working with the Project Coordinator to develop systems and processes for the effective running of the project including: engagement events and materials, implementing recording systems for loan and maintenance of all fleets.

The aim of this role is to deliver on the SNP manifesto commitment “We will provide free bikes for all children of school age who cannot afford them – and ensure every child in Scotland leaves school with the ability to cycle safely”, Transport Scotland (TS) initiated a programme of pilot projects to trial approaches of providing bikes to children who cannot afford one. The learning from the pilot projects will inform the design of larger-scale national programmes.

Sustrans is continuing with the successful pilot project which started in August 2021. We are working with six schools in total, three Primary and three High Schools in West Lothian, Dumfries and Galloway, and Aberdeenshire.

This role will require travel and work at locations as necessary to undertake projects on behalf of Sustrans. We offer true hybrid working, a flexible mix of occasional working from home and occasional travel to a nearby office hub when required.

About you

You should have experience of school, community or environmental project development and delivery. You will be working with children of Primary or early secondary school age (9-14). In addition you should have experience in leading group workshops and event planning.

You should be able to adapt your communication style with ease to ensure engagement with both partners and pupils.

Ideally you will have experience of delivering outdoor activities in accordance with local, and national safety guidance and risk assessments, and have an understanding of community based or environmental projects.

We aim to be a truly inclusive employer and welcome applications from people from all parts of the community, in particular from under-represented groups. Sustrans has a long-term commitment to being a charity for everyone - reducing inequality, valuing diversity, enabling inclusion and ensuring all people are treated with dignity and respect.
