Role

The PBC Foundation is a patient led UK-based support and advocacy charitable organisation. We provide support to patients in over 75 countries. We are the biggest non-profit organisation in the world supporting exclusively those affected by Primary Biliary Cholangitis: an incurable, progressive autoimmune condition which affects the liver.

Our aims and objectives are:

  • To provide PBC sufferers with accurate, up-to-date information on PBC, its implications, and treatment, in the form of our publications, including our compendium ‘Living with PBC’, our quarterly magazine ‘The Bear Facts’, our website and our recently released app
  • To provide support to all affected by PBC – including patients, their carers, concerned relatives and friends – in the form of a helpline, a regular publication, regional meetings within PBC sufferers’ local community, and a regional volunteer network throughout the UK
  • To educate medical practitioners about PBC, and to raise awareness of the services we provide, by distributing detailed information on PBC at medical events throughout the country, and by conducting extensive outreach work
  • To support research into PBC to find a cause/cure

The Role

The CEO will lead this established Charity and continue to build and future proof the organisation. The CEO will also create and embrace the vision providing focused strategic leadership, enabling the Charity to achieve challenging income generation targets and maintain the high level of service delivery to the members.

They will raise the profile of the charity with all supporters and stakeholders. The Foundation’s values and culture will be key to how the CEO will lead and empower staff and volunteers to continue to provide a service that is truly patient led.

They will be accountable to the Board for ensuring the Charity operates legally and safely.

Overall responsibilities:

Vision and Strategy

  • Work with the Board to construct an inspirational vision
  • Provide organisational leadership, and oversee the development and implementation of the Foundation’s strategy to deliver the vision
  • Translate the strategy into realistic plans
  • Measure progress against agreed Key Performance Indicators
  • Ensure the views of the PBC membership are always heard and acted upon

Governance

  • Build an effective relationship with the Chair and Board of Trustees
  • Ensure the Charity meets all legal, statutory and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure the Charity has effective and up to date policies in all areas
  • Ensure the annual report and accounts are submitted on time
  • Ensure that all information is current, appropriate and accepted clinical practice

Leadership and Communications

  • Good leadership skills and the ability to enthuse, motivate and develop a small team to deliver results
  • Ability to think strategically and to communicate the strategic vision
  • Create a culture of continuous improvement throughout the charity with training and mentoring opportunities for staff and volunteers
  • Build relationships with politicians, the media, government officials, health care professionals, other professional organisations, and pharmaceutical companies, to advance the Foundations aims.
  • Explore and action ways to enhance the Charity’s branding people and culture
  • Attend external events to raise awareness of PBC and the Foundation

Personal Skills and Attributes

Essential Experience:

  • An understanding of, and commitment to, the values of the PBC Foundation
  • Extensive knowledge of PBC/Liver Disease and the impact that it has on families
  • Knowledge of the patient journey when diagnosed and living with PBC/Liver disease
  • Helpline and or counselling experience supporting members through their diagnosis and their progression of PBC/liver disease
  • Experience of building and maintaining relationships with policy makers and senior health professionals within the field of PBC/Liver disease
  • A successful leadership record within an appropriate organisation and a strong fundraising or commercial element
  • Experience in developing and implementing patient focused organisational strategy
  • Evidence of leading change in the charitable health sector
  • A track record of growth; building an organisation and significantly increasing income
  • Experience of empowering, motivating and building teams through exceptional people leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Experience of positively raising an organisations profile and influencing external audiences
  • Evidence of effective communication and relationship management with a wide range of stakeholders, able to develop successful partnerships and encourage support
  • Experience in hosting on-line webinars and facilitating on-line Q &A’s through various platforms to increase patient/member engagement

Desirable Experience:

  • Previous CEO experience or similar role
  • Previous relationship experience with the pharmaceutical industry
  • Previous experience in the charitable sector
  • Understanding of data management and security
