Role

Want to work in one of the most influential places in Scotland? Now is your chance!

This is a great opportunity to join the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICe) as a Researcher. SPICe supports the scrutiny and legislative functions of the Parliament by providing impartial, accurate and timely information and briefings to Members of the Scottish Parliament, their staff, and Parliamentary staff. It comprises a research and information service.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates from a minority ethnic background who are under-represented at this level. All appointments will be made on merit. We have a values-based culture of respect and inclusion embedded in our organisation, and everyone has the ability to make a difference.

In addition to recruiting for these permanent roles, we’re also looking to build a pool of temporary and permanent Researchers to help us with future recruitment. We’d encourage you to apply if you’d like to be considered for any Researcher role this year.

We have roles for Researchers in three teams, where you’ll work alongside Senior Researchers and be involved in answering enquiries from MSPs in a range of areas.

• In the Health and Social Care team you could be looking at the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the establishment of a national care service.

• In the Justice and Social Affairs team you might cover civil and criminal justice, children’s social work services, culture, education and lifelong learning, housing, equalities and human rights.

• In the Post EU, Parliament and Constitution team you could cover post EU policy, elections, parliamentary and constitutional issues.

You’ll also contribute to committee briefings and analysis to help MSPs scrutinise the Scottish Government’s policies and help to prepare briefings and blog articles on relevant issues.

You’ll have analytical and research experience or policy development in the specialist areas for these roles and be able to work flexibly across the range of issues that the particular team covers. You’ll have excellent written and verbal communication skills, which enable you to convey complex issues with brevity and accuracy. You’ll be able to manage your own workload, working to tight deadlines and competing priorities, and will be expected to act impartially and exercise sound judgement in everything you do.

We offer a great range of benefits including 41.5 days of leave (including public holidays), the opportunity to join the Civil Service pension arrangements, flexible working and family-friendly policies.

If you’re looking for a new challenge and the opportunity to contribute to the Parliament’s vision, we’d love to hear from you.
