Background and Purpose of the Role
The Highlands & Islands Climate Hub is fully funded by the Scottish Government and is one of a network of Climate Action Hubs which will be established across Scotland to offer networking, support and encouragement of community led climate action. The vision for the Hub is to support and empower communities to develop local solutions to make the transition to net zero and climate resilient living through empowerment and capacity building in communities throughout the region. The Hub has been operating since September 2021 as a pathfinder project and has now secured up to 3 years funding from the Scottish Government. The Hub launched as a Community Interest Company, Highlands & Islands Climate Hub CIC where a membership is being built to support onward governance.
Representing the Region
The Highlands & Islands Climate Hub operate throughout the region and is committed to regional representation therefore it is important to us that the successful applicant lives, works, contributes and has knowledge of the communities within the area outlined in the post. You should therefore be resident within the Inverness and Inner Moray Firth area.
Main Objectives of the Hub 2023/24
• Strengthened and increased collaboration and knowledge sharing across and between community groups, public, private and 3rd sector partners.
• Minority and disadvantaged communities are visible, confident and active within the network and taking part in climate action activities.
• Increase in community led climate change mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity projects, driven by communities themselves, contributing to a fair and just transition to net zero.
• Increase in community climate literacy
• Empowered communities that are confident to discuss climate change and associated environmental and social issues.
• Increase in involvement in policy setting, decision making and local place planning by communities.
• An acceleration in climate action at a community level, based on greater collaboration between communities, local authorities and other stakeholders.
• Widen participation by engaging new communities and strengthening existing activity.
• Additional funding leveraged for climate action
• Develop contacts, research and partnerships in the area of community land ownership and carbon credits towards best practice and guidance in this area.
• Provide support to the wider hub network as it grows and look for opportunities to share best practice and expertise and enable wider learning across the network.
Job Purpose
The role of Development Officer will be to contribute towards the effective delivery of the Highlands & Islands Climate Hub on behalf of the Scottish Government. The role will support communities to collaborate, network and assist community groups in design, development and delivery of community led climate action projects. Signposting, networking and being proactive to join people and communities together is a key aspect of the role. Therefore, a degree of knowledge of the various structures, organisations and mechanisms within the third and community sector is required.
