Join us! – Opportunities for new Charity Trustees at Borders Pet Rescue (Borders Animal Welfare Association)
Borders Pet Rescue (BPR) was established in 1988, as a small, registered, Scottish charity offering animal rescue, re-homing and the promotion of responsible pet ownership through education and training across the Scottish Borders and adjoining areas. Our Rescue Centre is located at Craigsford, in Earlston. Each year we are able to find new homes for over 200 dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and exotics. We rely on donations from the public, on some fundraising, and primarily on the income raised by the four Borders Pet Rescue Charity Shops, located in Galashiels, Kelso, Duns, and Hawick. Like all animal charities, BPR relies on the generosity of the animal loving public to support the work and could not survive without the dedication of its many friends and volunteers.
The charity is governed by Trustees. We aim to have a Board which covers the key areas in which we work, and we are now seeking to appoint additional Trustees who, ideally, have experience in the following areas:
o Retail Management
o Property/Asset/Estate Management
o Management of Volunteers
o Animal Welfare
That said, we also welcome applications from individuals with other relevant experience. Our Trustees have ultimate responsibility for the operation and development of the charity, including animal welfare, compliance with charity legislation, fundraising, public relations and financial control.
This is an exciting time to be joining Borders Pet Rescue as a Trustee, as we will soon launch a newly-built kennel facility to help us respond to the ever-increasing demand from vulnerable animals. We also have ambitious plans for further development of our Rescue Centre, and an upcoming launch of both our new website and our online sales/purchase platform.
The principal responsibilities of a BPR Trustee include attending and actively participating in monthly Board meetings (held on a Monday evening, both virtually and face-to-face). Trustees bring their professional experience to help govern the charity, and Trustees actively participate in the charity’s activities, supporting volunteers, and undertaking fundraising, as well as being part of awareness-raising events. The time commitment required is a minimum of two days per month, including monthly Trustee meetings (of 2-3 hours per meeting). All Trustees are expected to share a passion and commitment to animal welfare. Please note that this is a voluntary role, although reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Treasurer and Trustees Wanted
Ricefield Arts & Cultural Centre is a registered charity and social enterprise for the exploration and promotion of Chinese culture and has an excellent reputation for delivering original and inspiring creative experiences, cultural events and workshops to community groups, public institutions and arts audiences around Scotland.
We are currently looking to appoint a Treasurer to join our small Board. The Treasurer will be responsible for managing all financial matters on behalf of our organisation and will be responsible for ensuring that the organisation has robust financial processes to ensure it meets its legal and constitutional requirements. It will also be the responsibility of the Treasurer to report the financial position at the board meetings. While we encourage and welcome applicants of all backgrounds, we are keen to hear from candidates that have experience of charity financial management or are chartered in a suitable accountancy field.
All Trustees are required to attend monthly board meetings, either at our office located in the heart of Glasgow city centre or via Zoom. In addition, we ask Trustees to attend our annual board development day, important meetings with stakeholders and some events and projects, where possible. As Ricefield Arts is a social enterprise, the role also involves serving as our Board of Directors.
Please note that this is a voluntary role. Neither the Trustees nor Board of Directors receive any remuneration, however, travel expenses incurred in carrying out board duties will be fully reimbursed.
Other than the Treasurer, we also wish to appoint additional Trustee(s) with community engagement or cultural events management experience to serve our Board. Please check our website for more information.
Hamilton Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) was formed over 50 years ago to provide a holistic advice service to the residents of Hamilton. As a member of the Scottish Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux network, Hamilton CAB aims to provide free, independent, impartial, and confidential advice and information to ensure that people understand their rights and responsibilities and can express their needs effectively. We campaign and influence to tackle the root cause of the problems people face and work to strengthen their rights.
Hamilton CAB currently operates from two offices in Hamilton and are supported by 18 members of staff and 31 volunteers including board members. The Bureau supports individuals with a wide range of general enquiries whilst project staff provide specialist support on topics including benefits, debt, utilities, and money matters.
The role:
We are seeking a committed and dynamic individual to serve as the Chair of our organisation.
As Chair, you will play a vital role by providing strategic leadership to the board, ensuring it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation. You will also provide line management, support and direction to the Chief Officer, helping them to achieve the organisation’s aims and objectives; and ensures the smooth running of Hamilton CAB.
We are looking for an individual who has experience of leadership and governance. You will have a passion for the voluntary sector, strong leadership skills and an ability to drive forward positive change.
Although, not financially remunerated, the role is high profile and respected within the community and will offer a great challenge, learning and networking opportunity for the right person.
There are an average of 6 Board meetings per year to commit to as well as preparation time and regular collaboration /communications with the team and stakeholders.

As an independent committee member of our main board, you will draw on your skills and experience to help deliver the strategy for achieving our mission, ensure that the charity’s resources are managed responsibly, and that we remain compliant with relevant laws and regulations.
There are four sub-committees with responsibility for assisting the board to discharge its duties in specific areas:
- Strategy and Delivery Committee
- Finance, Risk and Audit Committee
- People and Culture Committee
- Nominations and Governance Committee
Independent Committee Members are volunteers who are recruited to join trustees and senior staff on a specific committee and support the work of that committee, advising on matters relating to that committee’s areas of responsibility, contributing specialist knowledge as appropriate.

The role
We are seeking independent committee members who will join the People and Culture Committee and the Strategy and Delivery Committee.
To join the Committee we are seeking three individuals with proven experience and knowledge of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Volunteering or People/HR, and Digital Transformation.
The People and Culture Committee supports the board with:
- The people and culture activities including the equity, diversity and inclusion programme.
- Safeguarding, and health and safety matters.
- The overall employer offer, including setting and reviewing the remuneration of the Chief Executive.
- The Strategy and Delivery Committee supports the board with:
- Oversight of delivery of the agreed portfolio of strategic and operational programmes of work required to deliver the Ramblers’ strategy and charitable purpose.
Appointment
Appointments to sub-committees are reviewed by the nominations and governance committee, and then recommended for approval to the Board of Trustees. All committee appointments are subject to relevant eligibility checks.
Time Commitment
We know that people have other time commitments and so we want to make sure the committees work as well as possible for everyone.
Sub-committees are held up to four times per year, usually several weeks ahead of each board meeting. The meetings are held virtually and normally run from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. For each meeting you will need some time to read relevant papers.
Independent sub-committee members will be asked to sit on the committee for a period of three years, time commitments permitting.
The Person
To be considered as an independent committee member you should demonstrate:
- proven experience and knowledge in the specialism required
- a commitment to the mission, ambitions and values of the Ramblers
- integrity in your communication and decision making
- an ability to bring a strategic vision and provide sound and independent judgement
- an ability to think creatively
- a willingness to meet the minimum time commitment
- an ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to take decisions in the best interests of the Ramblers
