Cumbernauld and District Women’s Aid SCIO (CADWA) is looking for a woman to join our Board of Trustees as Treasurer. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in finance and financial planning and will advise and support the Trustees and management team in the financial management of the organisation. Experience of fundraising would also be advantageous as the Board is developing a fundraising strategy and plan..

About Us

CADWA is a voluntary organisation based in Cumbernauld providing a confidential service offering valuable information, support and safe and secure temporary accommodation to women and their children who have experienced domestic abuse in the Cumbernauld area. CADWA also campaigns to raise awareness of domestic abuse and supports other domestic and sexual violence services throughout the area.

As a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) CADWA has an independent, voluntary Board of Directors drawn from the local community and is accountable to its service users and funders which include the Scottish Government’s Delivering Equally Safe fund and the Robertson Trust. CADWA is a member of Scottish Women’s Aid.

Board currently has 7 members but can have a maximum of 9.

About the Role

You do not need to be an expert on domestic abuse or other forms of violence against women, but you will need to prove that you are interested in our work, be reliable, action focussed and committed to our principles and values.

Board meetings currently take place 6 weekly during the day at our office in Cumbernauld. Where this is not possible Board members can attend by video link. The position is voluntary but we will provide you with training and support and pay your expenses.

What you’ll do

We have an exciting opportunity for 2 volunteer Trustees (1 with a financial background, and 1 with a legal background) to join our Board of Trustees. In a time of organisational change, and growth, you will play an important role, providing your advice and guidance, whilst reviewing and challenging our financial and legal processes to support the organisation’s success and increase the opportunities for people in the communities we serve.

As part of your role, your main responsibilities will include:

• Carrying out the duties and legal responsibilities of being a trustee within a third sector organisation.

• Ensuring the organisation complies with its governing bodies, observes its charitable objectives and functions in line with the principles and practice of good governance.

• Sharing experience and providing guidance on best practice.

• Ensuring the organisation operates ethically, responsibly and with respect for the communities we serve.

• Acting as representatives for the organisation, leveraging your networks to support our mission.

• A willingness to commit the time required to fulfil Trustee duties and, from time to time, contribute to the work of specific tasks, such as, strategy development, governance review, leading discussions, and providing advice on initiatives in the domain of their expertise.

About you

The successful candidate for this role will:

• Understand the legal and regulatory requirements of businesses and third sector organisations.

• Be experienced in operational management.

• Be able to identify both risks to and opportunities for the organisation.

• Have the ability to assist with corporate governance.

• Be qualified with a relevant professional body.

• Have a financial or legal background, with experience of working within a related role.

• Be able to interpret and challenge appropriate data, including legal and financial data.

• Show a willingness to engage with and be a part of relevant sub-committees.

Although not a requirement for the role, knowledge of the legal and regulator requirements of a Board, and a background of volunteering or working within third sector organisations would be desirable.

Along with the above, we would be looking for individuals who share, and are able to demonstrate, the organisation’s values of being compassionate, open, collaborative, innovative and driven.

What’s involved

As part of your responsibilities in the role, we ask that you commit to attending 5 board meetings per year, normally taking place in the early evening. We ask that you are available to volunteer at least 30 hours per annum of your time to attend these meetings and take on additional responsibilities as required, such as supporting with sub-committees.

The Halliday Foundation meets both the immediate, practical needs and providing sustainable pathways out of poverty for people impacted by homelessness and deprivation - primarily in east end of Glasgow.

Using volunteers, the Halliday Foundation designs and delivers services to build self-esteem, reduce isolation, connect communities and develop employability skills. We build strong, trusting relationships free from stigma and judgement among the people who use our services, with donors and local community partners.

The Halliday Foundation have vacancies on the Board to oversee the management of the charity and ensure that it is financially viable, properly governed and complies with all relevant regulatory frameworks.

Paths for All, the leading voice for the promotion of physical activity and walking in Scotland, is seeking an exceptional leader to steer the charity through an exciting journey of change.

Our new Chair will see Paths for All establish an infrastructure supporting fundraising and income generation to help support walking programmes across Scotland as we deliver our ambitious ‘Step It Up’ strategy.

As Scotland’s national walking charity our mission is to encourage the people of Scotland to be physically active through walking. We know that walking (whether on foot or with a wheelchair or mobility aid) makes a valuable contribution to our physical, mental and social health. This is why we champion national walking programmes in schools, workplaces and communities and work in partnership to increase levels of physical activity, by helping to create inclusive, safe and attractive environments for walking.

The Chair will work with the trustees and senior management team to spearhead this mission, upholding Paths for All’s values and supporting the delivery of the strategy and new programmes that put walking at the heart of our communities across Scotland. They will ensure effective governance for the organisation, working closely with the Chief Executive Officer and other trustees to build relationships and collaborate to ensure success.

The ideal candidate will have the following key experience:

• A strong and visible passion and commitment to our mission to support the people of Scotland to be physically active through walking.
• Experience as a trustee, ideally as a Chair.
• Experience of fundraising or income generation.
• The ability to demonstrate strategic leadership and strong inter-personal and relationship building skills.
• Experience leading organisations through periods of development and change.
• Ability to apply principles of good charity governance.
• Understanding of the third sector.
• Understanding and connections into the Scottish Government.
• Eligible to be a Director at Companies House

About the Board

Paths for All board meet on a quarterly basis held in-person and take place at the Barracks conference centre within an accessible building in a central location in Stirling. The venue is close to the railway station and has parking nearby.

Our Quarterly Board meetings generally take place from 10am to 1pm, including lunch. In addition to the quarterly board meetings and AGM, we have a staffing and finance subgroup and an outcomes subgroup, both of which are led by the Chair and which meet online as and when required. In total, the Chair role requires an average time commitment of around 1-2 days per month, to allow for regular meetings with the Chief Executive Officer and attendance at relevant events in addition to Board meetings.
