Do you have experience of managing volunteers, an interest in the arts, and great communication skills?
The Gaiety Theatre has an opportunity for someone with experience in volunteer management to work in an exciting and ever-changing environment. The Volunteer Engagement Manager will lead on the continued relaunch and reinvention of our volunteer effort, playing a key role at the heart of our operations as we emerge from the pandemic and enter our second decade.
You’ll be aware of current best sector practice, including emerging trends and legal implications. You may have worked in theatre – or maybe you’re a theatre enthusiast, and this is your first time ‘behind the scenes!’
Most importantly, you’ll be highly organised, and an excellent communicator. In a new environment, you’ll need to be able to learn fast, while helping others learn too. And that doesn’t just apply to our volunteers – part of getting the job done will mean helping other members of the team work more effectively with our volunteers. A big part of the role depends on your ability to build relationships, so you’ll be a ‘people person,’ and really enjoy that side of your work.
The Organisation
Ayr Gaiety Partnership is the charity and social enterprise that runs The Gaiety Theatre, as well as an increasing range of producing, touring and creative engagement activity. While the theatre itself is 120 years old, the organisation has been going for a little over a decade, having reopened the theatre 10 years ago. The organisation sprang originally from the Ayr based Borderline Theatre Company and individuals in the local community. As a result, we have always aspired to be much more than just a theatre building; community-based activity has always been very much a part of what we do. We provide volunteering and learning opportunities in roles ranging from front of house to technical assistance, with a huge part of our success of dependent on our volunteer team – we simply couldn’t run shows without them.
This is an exciting time to join The Gaiety. The last few months have seen us return to a successful live programme on our main stage, after the long gap caused by the pandemic. The work carried out during the pandemic had also renewed our focus on creative engagement and producing activity, with exciting and innovative work with our communities. As we move forward, we’re looking to move up a gear in every aspect of our work.

Oral History Project Coordinator

Could you make a difference for members of the LGBT+ community in Edinburgh and beyond?
The Lavender Menace Queer Books Archive has grown out of Scotland’s first LGBT+ bookshops, Lavender Menace (1982-87) and West & Wilde (1987-97). They sold what we now call queer books – by, about or for LGBT+ people – at a time mainstream bookshops would not stock them. The bookshops also provided openly queer meeting places, where LGBT+ people were able to connect and felt affirmed and welcomed.
Bob Orr and Sigrid Nielsen, the owners of the original Lavender Menace Bookshop, in 2019 founded the Lavender Menace Queer Books Archive to keep this valuable LGBT+ book heritage alive and share it with the community. Through its amazing collection of books, the archive tells the story of queer people’s resistance, and the rise of what is now known as ‘queer pride’. These books told the stories of queer lives; they were written honestly and positively for the first time, and they changed lives.
This post represents a unique opportunity to work with Edinburgh’s Lavender Menace Queer Books Archive to develop an Oral History Project (OHP). The OHP will explore the impact and legacy of the Lavender Menace and West & Wilde Bookshops (1982-97), and more generally community experiences of reading LGBT+ books and magazines, and ways reading – now and in the past – has impacted on their identity. Stories and interpretation will be shared online as well as through a programme of events and a temporary exhibition.
The Oral History Project’s key activities are:
- Recruiting, supporting, training and coordinating volunteers to become involved in the OHP.
- Identifying OHP interview participants and devise ways to capture the individual and collective voices and stories of LGBT+ community members.
- Working with partners and stakeholders in the development and delivery of the project.
- Acting as the main point of contact for the volunteers and interviewees, to arrange and set up interviews, liaise with volunteers and interviewees.
- Ensuring policies, systems and processes are in place to collect, store and use all audio and visual material collected.
- Promoting the OHP and its programme of events, creating materials for use on social media, website and in the temporary exhibition, and ensuring the Archive’s profile is raised through these activities.
These activities build on the existing programme of events and projects under the responsibility of the Community Project Coordinator with the team of volunteers. The post holder will thus be able to tap into their experience, contacts and knowledge in taking this work forward.

The Design and Marketing Co-ordinator is a key member of the Marketing Team with specific responsibility for design, communications, print production and advertising for the School Communities team, in particular the wide range of materials and resources needed for the attainment programmes.
The post is the essential link between the School Communities team and external partners and suppliers. The role calls for a highly organised person with experience in design and print production, and experience in project managing marketing communications campaigns. The postholder works closely with the Design and Marketing Manager to deliver inhouse design and ensure brand guidelines are communicated and adhered to across the organisation.
To contribute to the fundraising target of Pitlochry Festival Theatre by securing and growing income from charitable Trusts and Foundations. Taking personal responsibility for contributing to meeting and raising the annual financial target by identifying, cultivating, and soliciting gifts and grants to support both revenue and capital activity.
