Are you a policy and public affairs expert?
Could you lead our work covering all policy and political influencing for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) in Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland?
As our Senior Policy and Public Affairs Manager, for our devolved nations, you’ll oversee three separate small teams, which are responsible for all interactions with politicians, political parties, and civil servants, particularly with respect to health (including public health) and scientific research policy, in each of our devolved nations.
You’ll lead our policy and public affairs and government relations programme in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, taking ownership of a range of policy issues and communicating them to a broad audience, ensuring that senior stakeholders are apprised of political and legislative trends that impact our priorities.
You’ll define and oversee the development and delivery of a proactive government relations and legislative strategy on key policy issues affecting the prevention, treatment and care, and research relating to heart and circulatory diseases. Maintaining dialogue with patient, clinical, political, and other stakeholders, you’ll work closely with these groups to develop high-level relationships that will enhance the BHF’s reputation amongst key decision makers.
Based at any of our devolved nations offices (Belfast, Cardiff or Edinburgh) you’ll form part of the senior management team of the BHF's Medical team, interacting regularly with the Head of Nations, the Medical Director and other Directors at the BHF's London offices.
Working arrangements
This is a blended role, where your work will be dual located between your home and any of our devolved nation offices in Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh.
The use of our office spaces is driven in part by your role and the activities you need to do. This may vary from time to time, so you must be prepared to work in a flexible way to unlock your best work for our cause. Most of our colleagues on blended contracts can expect to spend some time in their office each week, on average.

About you
With a deep understanding of the policy-making and political process in the UK with, ideally, excellent knowledge of the political systems in at least one of the devolved administrations, you’ll have some knowledge of the UK’s life sciences research environment, health policy, and the European and international landscape.
You’ll have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, able to present with credibility and gravitas to external audiences, and will be a proven leader, whilst also being a team player. You’ll have excellent writing skills, able to provide concise written and verbal briefings on complex issues, often at short notice, and will be able to work calmly, quickly and accurately under pressure of tight deadlines.
You’ll have an extensive understanding of parliamentary procedures in the Devolved Nations and will have a proven track record of building and nurturing excellent relationships and exerting influence over external stakeholders’ agendas.
With experience of having run or managed successful policy and/or public affairs work at a senior level, ensuring expectations, responsibilities and the purpose and vision for the team are clear and delivered, you’ll have experience of leading internal and/or external stakeholder relations in a high profile and/or complex organisation as well as developing and implementing policy and/or public affairs strategies and plans.

You will be part of Scotland’s leading charity providing support to people with chest, heart and stroke conditions to live life to the full again. Our Hospital to Home services form a nationwide network of local support groups, nurses, volunteers and one-to-one support teams helping families adjust to life with a heart or lung condition or after a stroke.
We are looking for a Community Support Coordinator to join our amazing team in the North area. This role is focused on making sure that people affected by chest, heart and stroke conditions get the help they need and get back to doing the things that matter to them.
Through our Community Support Services, you will support people to have the confidence and tools to self-manage their health condition and live as independently as possible. You’ll also help people get back to doing the things that are important to them – from simple things like walking to their local shop following a stroke, to returning to a sky-high hobby of gliding!
You’ll be directly involved in supporting people with chest, heart and stroke conditions through both one-to-one and group services in both community and hospital settings. You’ll work with the rest of the Community Support Services team in Grampian, and manage a team of incredible volunteers, to make a real difference to the lives of people with our conditions.
Candidates don’t need to have medical knowledge as training is provided on our health conditions. We are looking for someone with a positive attitude towards people with disabilities and long-term conditions; an understanding of the challenges faced by people with chest, heart and stroke conditions including Long Covid; an understanding of community service provision; the ability to recruit, manage and motivate a team of volunteers; and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Overall Purpose of Role: To facilitate the work of ME Research UK by securing income through providing excellent donor stewardship which recognises and inspires individuals, groups, trusts, and, potentially, corporate entities, to begin or to maximise their giving. The Donor Relations Officer will grow the supporter base of the charity by identifying, researching and implementing new ways to approach potential supporters and by creating/retaining an engaged, active, and loyal supporter base
Background: ME/CFS is a debilitating illness, which is estimated to affect up to 250,000 people in the UK alone, but significant challenges remain in its diagnosis and treatment. ME Research UK aims to change this. We commission and fund high-quality scientific (biomedical) investigation into the causes, consequences and treatment of ME/CFS. Founded in the year 2000, we have funded 65 research projects globally at a cost of over £4m and, most recently added a PhD level research scheme to our grant making activities.
Main Responsibilities
- You will take the lead role in income generation within the charity. The role includes
- Recognising the input of current donors and encouraging increased donations whilst also increasing income from other current income streams.
- Attracting, inspiring, and supporting fundraisers to maximise their fundraising potential, recognise their efforts, and secure an ongoing future relationship with the charity.
- Identifying, researching, submitting, and managing regular funding applications to trusts and grant making bodies on behalf of ME Research UK and maintain strong relationships with them by complying with their reporting/grant making requirements.
- Leading the development and implementation of the charity’s fundraising strategy to ensure resilient and robust income streams - this to include regular fundraising appeals, legacy income, regular donations, payroll giving, and active fundraising opportunities e.g. examining paid places in events such as marathons
