Dunfermline Foodbank is offering an exciting and challenging job opportunity to assist the foodbank manager to help manage and lead a committed group of volunteers as they seek to alleviate hunger, put food on the table, restore dignity and revive hope to local people in crisis in the west of Fife.

Dunfermline Foodbank, established as a Scottish Charity in 2012, has fed over 26,000 men, women and children through its network of five foodbanks covering the west of Fife, as a franchisee of the respected Trussell Trust network of UK foodbanks.

Over the last 12 years, we have expanded our operation to include 5 satellites and a central warehouse, also increasing the number of volunteers to over 200 to better support those affected by food poverty in the West Fife area.

We require a passionate, enthusiastic and organised Assistant Foodbank Manager to continue to help lead us forward to meet future challenges and provide an excellent service for the community.

The working hours are 20 hours per week with a degree of flexibility, covering the open times of our foodbanks, occasional evening presentations and limited weekend work.

Remuneration reflects the responsibility of the post at £13,440 per annum.

The successful candidate will have the following key skills:

• Ability to manage and monitor the development of a project
• Experience of managing people
• Experience of working or volunteering in an organisation that deploys volunteers
• Good oral communication
• Driver with clean licence
• Confident user of email, word processing and internet

The Trust

The Strathmartine Trust was founded in 1999 with a legacy provided by the late Ronald Cant. The aim of the Trust is to support the study, research and education of Scottish history, broadly defined. Based in its own premises in St Andrews, the Trust offers self-catering accommodation for visiting scholars, and has a large library and study space for researchers. The Trust also offers awards and grants, and supports scholarships for PhD study in the Universities of Dundee and St Andrews. It maintains a community profile, hosting seminars and other events, supporting local and national historians to share their research and ideas. In 2014, the Trust established the Strathmartine Press, which publishes a small number of books that focus on local history. On a day-to-day basis, the Trust is managed by a part-time Director, who is responsible to the Chair and the Board of Trustees.

The Opportunity

Following a review of the Trust’s governance, the Trust is embarking on a search for new Trustees. The period of appointment will be five years, with the possibility of an extension to seven years. Trustee posts are not renumerated, but reasonable travel and other related expenses will be reimbursed. Over time, by the end of 2026, the intention is to have a refreshed Board of Trustees that comprises a diverse range of knowledge, skills and expertise - some of these are listed below; it is not expected that applicants for Trustee appointments will have all of these. As the Trust reorganises its administrative structure, it hopes also to expand and refresh its portfolio of activities, and the role of Trustee thus offers an exciting opportunity to assist in shaping a dynamic future for this important contributor in the field of Scottish historical research and education.

The Role

Trustees will be expected to be active in the running of the Trust, beyond simply providing strategic direction at meetings. Some Trustees will have specific oversight of the work of the Director of Operations in one of a number of key areas. An essential requirement, however, is that Trustees should be able to demonstrate an enthusiasm for Scottish history. Applicants should be aware of the regulations concerning, and the statutory requirements of, charitable trusts in Scotland. Specifically, Trustees might have knowledge, skills and experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Higher education and research
• Finance, including accountancy and investments
• Human resources
• Technology, including digital strategy and data protection
• Charity and other relevant compliance
• Publishing
• Marketing
• Leadership and management

The Time Commitment

Trustees are expected to attend, virtually or in person, a minimum of four Trustee Meetings each year; occasionally, additional meetings are organised to discuss grant applications or other significant matters. In addition to the time taken to prepare for and attend meetings, Trustees will need to allocate time to reading and evaluating applications during the annual grant award process. It is expected that Trustees will also remain engaged and interested in the day-to-day operation of the Strathmartine Centre and Press.

As an independent committee member of our main board, you will draw on your skills and experience to help deliver the strategy for achieving our mission, ensure that the charity’s resources are managed responsibly, and that we remain compliant with relevant laws and regulations.

There are four sub-committees with responsibility for assisting the board to discharge its duties in specific areas:

• Strategy and Delivery Committee
• Finance, Risk and Audit Committee
• People and Culture Committee
• Nominations and Governance Committee

Independent Committee Members are volunteers who are recruited to join trustees and senior staff on a specific committee and support the work of that committee, advising on matters relating to that committee’s areas of responsibility, contributing specialist knowledge as appropriate.

The role

We are seeking independent committee members who will join the People and Culture Committee and the Strategy and Delivery Committee.

To join the Committee we are seeking three individuals with proven experience and knowledge of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Volunteering or People/HR, and Digital Transformation.

The People and Culture Committee supports the board with:

• The people and culture activities including the equity, diversity and inclusion programme.
• Safeguarding, and health and safety matters.
• The overall employer offer, including setting and reviewing the remuneration of the Chief Executive.
• The Strategy and Delivery Committee supports the board with:
• Oversight of delivery of the agreed portfolio of strategic and operational programmes of work required to deliver the Ramblers’ strategy and charitable purpose.

Appointment

Appointments to sub-committees are reviewed by the nominations and governance committee, and then recommended for approval to the Board of Trustees. All committee appointments are subject to relevant eligibility checks.

Time Commitment

We know that people have other time commitments and so we want to make sure the committees work as well as possible for everyone.

Sub-committees are held up to four times per year, usually several weeks ahead of each board meeting. The meetings are held virtually and normally run from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. For each meeting you will need some time to read relevant papers.

Independent sub-committee members will be asked to sit on the committee for a period of three years, time commitments permitting.

• proven experience and knowledge in the specialism required
